Byng sinks Crowder Demons

Aug. 28—BYNG — The Byng Pirates scored at least two runs in each of their final four at-bats and steadily pulled away from Crowder for a 9-1 win Monday at Stokes Field.

Coach Jake Wellington's club ranked No. 5 in Class 2A, improved to 8-1 on the year, while Crowder left town at 2-5. The Demons were the first unranked team the Pirates had played all season.

The Pirates are now set to face Class A No. 9 Ripley at 5 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the 45th Annual Roff Baseball Tournament.

Three Byng seniors paced an 11-hit Byng offense with three hits each. Preston Tapia went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, two stolen bases and two runs scored; Kendon Wood finished 3-for-3 with a walk, a double, two stolen bases, two RBIs and a run scored; and Callen Leslie also went 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored.

Brody Airington was hit by a pitch twice and scored a pair of runs for the hosts.

Crowder managed just three total hits, including a double by A Motley. T Cook finished 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI for the Demons.

Sophomore Brycen Smith earned the pitching win for the Pirates. He struck out eight, walked three and allowed just one earned run in 4.1 innings. Airington recorded the final two outs of the ballgame.

Quick start helps Silo sink Latta

SILO — After a bumpy start, the Latta High School baseball team — behind the pitching of junior Ryder Perry — held powerful Silo in check over the final five innings in a 5-0 loss to the Rebels on the road Monday night.

The Panthers, ranked No. 7 in Class 2A, fell to 5-4 on the year while No. 2 Silo stayed unbeaten at 6-0. Latta is scheduled to battle Class B No. 1 Calumet at 7:15 p.m. Thursday in the prime-time matchup of the 45th Annual Roff Baseball Tournament.

The Rebels scored five times in the bottom of the first inning. That big volley was highlighted by a two-RBI double from Sam Mendenall and a run-scoring two-bagger by Braden Hill.

Perry got the Panthers out of the early jam by recording outs against three of the four batters he faced. He then went on to pitch 5.1 total scoreless innings. He struck out one, walked one and scattered six hits while keeping the Rebels off the scoreboard. Kaiden Goolsby got the last two outs for the Panthers in relief.

It was the first time in six games that the Rebels were held to fewer than 12 runs.

Hill tossed the complete-game shutout for Silo. He struck out six, walked one and allowed just three Latta hits.

Gavin Mullins cracked a double for the Panthers while Landon Fortner and Darien Miller had the other Panther hits.

Jeret House and Bryce Vandenburg had two hits each in a 10-hit Silo offense. Vandeburg finished 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored and House went 2-for-3 and added a double.

Saints shut out Stonewall club

OKLAHOMA CITY — Santa Fe South ace Anthony Carter had the Stonewall Longhorns on lockdown Monday night.

Carter pitched six shutout innings and the Saints blanked the Longhorns 7-0. Coach Dillon Monday's club, ranked No. 17 in Class A, fell to 4-6 on the year, while the Saints — ranked No. 13 in Class 2A, improved to 7-4. Stonewall is set to host Class 2A No. 9 Colbert at 6 pm. Thursday.

Carter struck out 12, walked three and allowed just one hit in six strong innings Reliever J Durant then struck out all three SHS hitters he faced in an inning of relief.

Laden Bailey had the only Stonewall hit of the game.

Francisco Morales paced a six-hit Santa Fe attack, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Diego Rodriguez went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk two RBIs and a run scored for the home team and Albert Gallegos went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
