Champions crowned in final night of Southern New England Golden Gloves boxing action

FALL RIVER – Michael Gaudreau doesn’t fight in spurts. He just fights.

The scrappy 125-pounder from Fall River let the leather fly in earning a 4-1 decision over fellow Fall Riverite Roberto Colon in the open division finals of the Southern New England Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament on Saturday night before 350 enthusiastic fans at the Fall River PAL.

Brendan Palma of the host Fall River PAL completed his 2022 SNEGG 3-0, posting a unanimous decision over Kevin Albano in the sub-novice final at 156 pounds.

Champions were crowned in the sub-novice, novice and open divisions. Open and novice champs earn a berth in the New England Golden Gloves next month in Lowell.

MIKE GAUDREAU

A crowd favorite in past years, Gaudreau last night made his SNEGG open class debut. With a full-steam ahead approach that would earn him zero nominations for night’s most artistic boxer award, he started fast, absorbed some solid shots from tough Colon, and came back strong in the middle of the second round after it briefly appeared he may have punched himself out.

Gaudreau connected with a reasonable amount of the overhead rights, straight rights, and left hooks he unloaded. He seemed determined not to allow Colon to take decent breath.

The third round was a delight, with Colon getting the edge for the first half and Gaudreau landing flurries late.

BRENDAN PALMA

For the third time in as many fights at the 2022 SNEGG, Palma proved to be in superb shape, and he rocked Albano for an 8-count in the third round. Palma worked combinations, to body and head. PAL coach Libby Medeiros said his protege fairly well stuck to the game of moving to Albano’s left to avoid the right lead the On Point gym had favored in a previous bout they watched on video.

“Conditioning and following instructions,” Medeiros said. “He beat the kid at his own punch. I told him all the kid does is throw right hands, right hands.

“He hit (Albano) with some upper cuts, which was good, and a few times he came back with the hook like he was supposed to.”

NEW BEDFORD’S FERRER BROTHERS

Jose Ferrer, 23, and younger brother Nemesio Ferrer, both out of New Bedford’s Santiago Gym, punched their respective tickets to Lowell.

Looking polished and in control, Jose posted a unanimous decision over talented Miguel Cruz of the Hard Knocks gym at 112 pounds open division. Nemesio won via split decision over Mouhamed Faye (B&F Boxing) at 136 novice.

Jose’s effort included a dominant third round in which Cruz had to take two 8-counts.

“Keeping my distance and shooting that right hand down the middle, which actually worked in that third round,” he said. “I shot that right hand down the middle and it landed perfectly, and I got two standing eight counts.”

The Ferrers were, arguably, the most popular boxers of the night. Their very vocal rooters, Nemesio said, consisted mostly of family, and he gave Ferrer Nation credit for his win.

“They came out and supported me and I appreciate everything they do,” he said.

To defeat Faye, Nemesio Ferrer said, a key was giving his foe different looks, working top to bottom, jabs to the top, straight right hands to the body, a hook to the head.

“It was working,” the ultra-quick Ferrer said. “And then I wanted to keep my distance, stay calm, bend my knees, listen to the corner.”
