Highlanders advance to state tournament, will play James Monroe

Mar. 5—upper glade — Greater Beckley Christian fought off an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter but Webster County held on for a 72-70 victory in the Class A Region 3 co-finals Tuesday night.

The game was tied 34-34 at halftime and 56-56 going to the fourth. The host Highlanders were able to get to a 68-60 lead but the Crusaders chipped away.

Webster led 69-68 before three free throws made it a two-possession game with less than a minute to play. The Crusaders got to 72-70 when Aaron Hall was fouled and sent to the line three three-tenths of a second left.

Aiming to miss intentionally for hopes of a tip-in, the free throw did not hit the rim, resulting in a violation. Webster was awarded the ball and inbounded before the clock hit zero.

Rayden Triplett led the Highlanders with 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Logan Leichliter and Riley Clevenger both scored 14 points, while Ashton Moll and Riley Clevenger each had 13 points and four assists. McCourt added eight rebounds and Moss six.

Keegan Davidson led Greater Beckley with a game-high 21 points. Hall added 14 and Kash Hendrix 12.

Webster (21-4) will be the No. 4 seed and will face No. 5 James Monroe Wednesday, March 13, at 9 p.m.

The two met Jan. 4 in the New River CTC Invitational in Beckley, with the two-time reigning state champion Mavericks taking a 59-51 victory.
