Hill leads Hudson in multiple sports, classroom as Scholar-Athlete of the Year

HUDSON — Athletics was always important to Lauren Hill.

Growing up, she was involved in numerous sports and activities. In high school she was a four-sport athlete who earned 12 varsity letters.

She wasn’t going to let something like falling behind on her grades stop her.

“My parents they kept on me,” said the daughter of Amy and Andy Hill. “They told me school comes before sports, student comes before athlete. They told me if I didn’t get everything done then I didn’t get to play and that was all I wanted to do.”

Hill was more than a student-athlete. She was a scholar-athlete and today is the Hudson representative of the Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor.

Hill finished with a 4.076 GPA and was the Hudson salutatorian, ranking No. 2 in her class. In addition to her sports, she was the senior class secretary, junior class vice president, was a member of student council and the National Honor Society and part of multiple clubs, including the Students Leading Students (SLS) group.

She was a recipient of the Lenawee County Intermediate School District Excellence Award and volunteered with the American Red Cross.

“I had a lot of support,” she said. “That helped.”

Amy Hill coached her daughter in softball at Hudson. She missed her freshman year when the season was canceled due to COVID-19 but was on the varsity the next three years.

“She’s competitive and hard on herself,” Amy said. “She’s competitive on the field and in the classroom. She wanted to get an A and wasn’t very happy if she got a B.”

Hill, who is a teacher at Hudson, said her daughter worked hard on her grades.

“She’s a bright kid,” she said. “That sure helps. She had to put in the work and balance her time with sports and academics.”

Hill had a great senior season in all of her sports. She was third team All-State in volleyball and one of the top rebounders and top blocked shot artists in the county in basketball.

In softball she led the county in wins with 18 and was named the county Pitcher of the Year.

“She never specialized in any one sport,” her mom said. “She was really good at everything.”

Hill is planning to attend Michigan State University in the fall and study nursing.

“I was always a big State fan,” she said. “My grandparents met there. We toured it and I fell in love with it. I’m excited.”
