Local Sports: Dundee swimmers bring home SMISL crown

DUNDEE – Dundee dominated the lower division of the Southeast Michigan Independent Swim League meet Saturday.

The Vikings amassed 417 points to 278 for runner-up Riverview.

St. Mary Catholic Central placed sixth with 94, Monroe seventh with 69, Erie Mason-Ida eighth with 39, and New Boston Huron-Taylor ninth with 32.

Dundee’s Sara Carter was voted Swimmer of the Meet and the Vikings’ Sarah Eubanks took Coach of the Meet honors.

Carter won the individual medley and 500 freestyle.

Emma O’Connell also was a double winner in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles.

Dundee swept the relays and got wins from Joslyn Ball (butterfly) and Kaylee Imo (breaststroke). Brook Hester, Lia Parry and Lillian Ratliff took seconds, and Audrey Bennett, Kaylee Desbrough, Lily Homrich, Natalie Bron, Elana Williams, Kiersten Matzinger and Camdyn Clark cracked the top 10.

The 200-yard freestyle relay of Ball, O’Connell, Imo and Parry broke the pool record.

Maya Zaleski was third in the 50, and McKenzie Kidd, Monika Burkardt and Kate Rutkowski also placed high for SMCC.

Nicole Rykse of Monroe was eighth in both the 200 and 500 freestyles with lifetime-best times. Other leaders for the Trojans were Abby Dieckmann, Delani Willey, Alice Hause, and Lauren Lahna.

Isabella Maitland was fourth in the butterfly for Huron-Taylor.

Sophia Sorg and Riley Jacobs led Mason-Ida, which had at least one personal-best performance from everyone on the roster.

Ahl leads Bedford

ADRIAN – Grace Ahl took second in the 500-yard freestyle and placed third in the butterfly to highlight Bedford’s day in the upper division of the Southeast Michigan Independent Swim League meet Saturday.

Madison Walker was third in the backstroke. Other Mules to crack the top 8 were Mia Tennant, Lily Landolt, Madison Walker, Izzy Rischman, and Annabelle Hill.

Detroit Country Day won the meet with 404 points and Adrian was second with 326. Bedford placed fourth with 159.

JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL

Bedford splits

TEMPERANCE – Bedford’s eighth-grade team split a doubleheader against Saline on Saturday, dropping the first game 23-16 and taking the second game 36-17.

Evan Gartee led the scoring in both games.  Everett Wingate and Corbin Miller led in rebounding. Hussein Salami and Keagan Dixon also played well.
