Top performances at Section 4 girls track & field state qualifier
Binghamton's Amiah Brissett, Elmira's Vicky Mordvinova and Delhi's Eleanor Lees were first-place overall finishers in two events apiece at the Section 4 girls track and field state qualifier, held Wednesday and Thursday at Union-Endicott's Ty Cobb Stadium.
The meet included athletes from Division I and Division II schools throughout Section 4.
What's Next
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association Outdoor Track & Field Championships will also be held over two days, with Middletown High School hosting June 9 and 10.
The first-place Division I and Division II finisher in each event qualified for the state meet, along with the next-highest finisher who has met the state standard at any invitational or championship meet during the season. Athletes can also qualify for states by meeting a super standard during the season.
Standout Performers
Brissett edged Division II Odessa-Montour's Victoria Brewster for the top overall top time in both the 100 (12.47) and 200 (25.82). Brewster's times were 12.52 and 25.95. Last year Brewster placed fifth in the Division II 100 dash at states in 12.61 seconds. Brissett also helped the Patriots finish first in the 400 relay.
Mordvinova topped the 800 field Wednesday in 2:11.74 and came back Thursday to lead the way in the 1,500 in 4:40.53, nearly seven seconds ahead of the pack. During the 2022 outdoor state meet, Mordvinova placed 12th overall and eighth in Division I with an 800 time of 2:16.36. She was 13th overall and 11th in Division I in the 1500 in 4:36.57.
Lees was tops overall in the 2,000 steeplechase in 7:35.85 and was No. 1 in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:05.77.
Corning girls placed first in three events. The Hawks won the 1,600 relay and 3,200 relay and Corning's Cella McLaughlin was first in the 100 hurdles (15.8).
Maine-Endwell's Panayiota Anastos took first in the shot put (37 feet) and second in the discus (109 feet, 9 inches) to qualify for states in each.
Tess Eisner of Horseheads had a similarly successful two days. She won the long jump with a top effort of 17 feet, 5 1/2 inches and took second in the triple jump behind Lansing's Kristen Johnston (35 feet, 5.75 inches) with a top effort of 35 feet, 5 inches.
