Then: With over 60 outfit changes, Alicia Silverstone (who reportedly didn’t even have to audition for the part of Cher) inspired a generation of teen girls (including a future Iggy Azalea https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-zpOMYRi0w). This Betty’s signature look? Full plaid ensembles worn with miniskirts, Mary Janes, and knee socks. But when she wasn’t dressing for school, she wore ensembles that were well beyond her years—body-con frocks like that white Calvin Klein sheath that still stands the test of time. Costume designer Mona May has said that she looked to European designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier and Azzedine Ala?a to draw inspiration for Silverstone’s character, paving the way for one of the film’s most memorable lines, “It’s an Ala?a!”
