2014 was indubitably the year of the sneaker. An essential component of both normcore and athleisure dressing, sneakers stopped being a gym-only shoe, with high-end interpretations from Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, and Raf Simon’s sneaker-soled pumps at Dior. When the sneakers didn’t come to the runways, the runways came to the sneakers, with Riccardo Tisci’s collaboration with Nike becoming one of THE most coveted shoes of the year. The number one shoe though, was not an exclusive collaboration, or a hard-to-find obscure Japanese style, it was the Stan Smith, Adidas’ best selling sneaker of all time. Seen on everyone from Celine designer Phoebe Philo to the models on the Jacquemus’ Spring 14 runway, it’s the coolest shoe that everyone can actually have. Adidas Stan Smiths

At Givenchy, the heel was turned into the sexiest weapon yet, with a gold nail for a heel, and a sultry combination of croc and leather to wrap around the ankle. But perhaps the most iconic heels of the year, are Kim Kardashian’s beige Hermes strappy heels, which she wore with everything from denim cutoffs to Balmain blazers. Designers took a trip to the wild west this season, with sleek, modernized versions of the cowboy boot. Gianvito Rossi’s turned it into a kicky ankle boot with contrasting white leather piping, while Sergio Rossi extended it all the way past the knee and added metallic silver details. Gucci led the pack, of course, with their classic horse-bit style that was made for walking with a little mini-skirt, and at Louis Vuitton and Saint Laurent, it was all about sleek styles in sumptuous leathers. Marc Jacobs went all in with his retro inspiration, sending out models in ankle boots with low, round heels, decorated with swirls of contrasting leather. Totally far out. Gucci
