2015 Emmys Best Dressed: Taraji P. Henson & Kerry Washington Earn Top Marks

Even if Sarah Paulson doesn’t take home the Emmy, she’ll leave tonight with the validation that she’s Yahoo Style’s winner of best dressed. Completely covered in sequins, the off-the shoulder section was in black and another stripe also offset the rest of all-over navy.
Claire Danes in Prada.
Claire Danes loves to take risks and this Prada dress certainly is one. Like a pink and purple brick wall, the “Homeland” star’s gown was held up with chain link straps, which weaved throughout the piece.
Lady Gaga in Brandon Maxwell.
Lady Gaga’s longtime designer and friend Brandon Maxwell just made his runway debut at New York Fashion Week, so it comes as no surprise that the singer and upcoming “American Horror Story” actress wore a custom design from him. Mother Monster, whose style has gotten increasingly more normal over the past few months, was incredibly ladylike in the black number.
Christina Hendricks in Naeem Khan.
Christina Hendricks said she was going to wear something unlike anything she’d worn before and she did not disappoint. Surprising her fans in a fitted dress, the “Mad Men” actress wore a Naeem Khan dress completely embellished in metal all arranged in a geometric pattern.
Heidi Klum in Atelier Versace.
Heidi Klum gave off major Big Bird vibes in a yellow dress from from Altelier Versace’s Fall/Winter 2015 collection. The couture gown featured a single ruffle shoulder, sheer beaded skirt and leaves appliquéd on the bodice.
Maisie Williams in pink.
Maisie Williams’s pink dress looked a quilt but who cares because she looked so sweet in the bubblegum piece. Even more fun than the midi dress itself were her accessories, wearing furry peep toe heels and carrying a clutch in the shape of a penguin wearing a tuxedo.

Just days after hitting the runway, the dress Binx Walton wore at the Ziegfeld theater show became Kerry Washington’s red carpet look for the 2015 Emmys. A mix of many metals, the gold and silver mesh and sequin mid-calf hemline hitting piece was on point.
Taraji P. Henson in Alexander Wang.
Taraji P. Henson wore Alexander Wang for the first time at the Met Gala and hasn’t stopped since. The designer, who recently celebrated 10 years of his eponymous label, custom made Cookie’s red carpet dress. With her hair in a bob, she was sweet and tough as nails all in one, with a lace bodice and chainlink straps.
Kathryn Hahn in Vivienne Westwood.
Kathryn Hahn caught the best floral bouquet of the night in a Vivienne Westwood dress. The purple, pink, green, red, and black patterned dress featured tiers, an asymmetrical hemline, and a protruding piece off of the strapless top.

In a very ‘80s fabric that could’ve been seen on Jane Fonda leggings in a jazzercize video, Emma Roberts somehow made the shimmering latex chic in a plunging neckline.
Elizabeth Moss in Oscar de la Renta.
Elizabeth Moss wore a Peter Copping for Oscar de la Renta hot pink gown. While she wasn’t the best dressed in magenta, the silhouette was still nice on her and the platinum blonde hair worked great with the bright shade.
Julianne Hough in Marchesa.
It’s the mark of a privileged fashionista to be able to pull off the runway. At the Emmys, Julianne Hough earned her credentials wearing a Marchesa gown that walked only days ago in New York. The collection was inspired by birds and the caged dress on the “Dancing With the Stars” host was edgy and beautiful simultaneously.
January Jones in Ulyana Sergeenko.
January Jone was invited to the Emmys for her period show “Mad Men,” yet her Sunday night look was all 2015. The strapless jumpsuit took the one-shoulder trend and turned it on its head by covering only one leg in ruffles.
Jill Soloway in Bottega Veneta.
Not only did Jilly Soloway take home the Emmy for Best Directing, Comedy, she also scored a perfect 10 for her Bottega Veneta polka dot suit and Stella McCartney creepers.
Lena Headey in Zuhair Murad.
Lena Headey’s famous scene in “Game of Thrones” had her taking it all off and therefore it wouldn’t have been surprising if she’d worn a naked gown a la Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé. But instead she went the couture route and chose a berry red Zuhair Murad dress from the Fall 2015 collection. Never has covering up looked so good.
Maggie Gyllenhaal in Oscar de la Renta.
Maggie Gyllenhaal, in an Oscar de la Renta gown from Peter Copping’s first collection for the house, was just OK. She gets props for the designer choice but the big skirt did nothing for her.
Naomi Watts in Dior.
Naomi Watts chose a dress from Dior’s Fall 2012 collection. Interestingly, she’s not the only one. Maybe she’s a big fan of the recent documentary “Dior and I” and wanted to give that a nod. No matter what the motivation, the midi dress with differently embellished patterns on both the front and back is a clear winner.
Gina Rodriguez in Lorena Sarbu.
The breakout star of the year for her role in “Jane the Virgin,” Gina Rodriguez looked like she fell from heaven in a white Lorena Sarbu gown.
Taylor Schilling in Stella McCartney.
Taylor Schilling shined as bright as the sun — literally, I’m blind — in a Stella McCartney dress. The peplum hemline hit just at the ankle and the one shoulder ruched fabric. That many techniques in one piece would usually be a recipe for disaster but instead it came together wonderfully.
Allison Janney in a sheer and sequin dress.
The “Mom” actress, who won for her comedic role, was the only star to take on the naked trend. Mind you, she’s 55 so she deserves so much ore than just an Emmy.

Party in the front and a true fiesta in the back! Sarah Hyland’s berry Zac Posen gown was incredibly on-trend with the off-the-shoulder silhouette and then she turned around to reveal a cutout.
Joanna Newsom in DelPozo and husband Andy Samberg.
Sure, it’s Andy Samberg’s night as the host of the broadcast, but his wife Joanna Newsom stole the show on the red carpet in a DelPozo dress. The gown flowed on the bottom but was structured on top, creating a striking dichotomy.
Mindy Kaling in Salvador Perez.
Mindy Kaling has found her color. Silhouette on the other hand? Not so much. The “Mindy Project” actress was golden in one sense, but drab on the other.
Amy Poehler in Michael Kors.
Amy Poehler’s secret to looking young and fresh must be comedy. The “Parks and Rec” actress, who was nominated for the sixteenth time, wore a black dress with a halter top and side cutouts, looking no older than her 44 years.

Always a winner, Joanne Froggatt opted for something a bit more futuristic in a J. Mendel dress. The blush color was pretty and then accented in black, which is an off pairing but still somehow worked.

The brand SAFiYAA is new, but Julia Louis-Dreyfus is an old red carpet pro. The “VEEP” actress knows her body and how to win a red carpet, even if it’s just a black dress.
Julie Bowen in George Chakra.
“If I don’t get him some press up in here, he may not give me another dress,” Julie Bowen said of George Chakra. The “Modern Family” actress was in plain ole’ black but with some futuristic straps, she managed to break out from the pack.
Jamie Lee Curtis in black.
Jamie Lee Curtis didn’t dare to do anything very exciting, but the fact that the black gown fit her to a T gave her extra points.
Anna Chlumsky in Bibhu Mohapatra.
Anna Chlumsky, in a Bibhu Mohapatra gown and Chopard jewels, looked like a work of art in the white number covered in flowers. Paired with a crown braid, she went for the Grecian look and nailed it.
Jaime Alexander in Armani Privé.
Jamie Alexander might’ve been sweating in long sleeves, but it was worth it. The actress, who was with Peter Facinelli, wore a a gown from Armani Privé’s Fall 2015 collection.
Cat Deeley in Monique Lhuillier.
At six months pregnant, Cat Deeley still wore a dress straight off the runway from Monique Lhullier. The “So You Think You Can Dance” host, in a gown from the Fall 2015 collection, appeared like an Emmys statue herself in the beaded slip dress on steroids.
Aubrey Plaza in Alexandre Vaultier.
Far from the Parks and Rec department in Pawnee, Aubrey Plaza looked out-of-character in an incredibly sexy Alexandre Vaultier black gown with a plunging neckline and side slit.
Laura Prepon in Christian Siriano.
Laura Prepon, “Orange Is the New Black” star, stood out in a red gown made by Christian Siriano. The red gown was basically a red strapless gown made a little more fancy with a gold neckpiece that framed her chest.
Kristen Schaal in Rubin Singer.
Is that you Kristen Schaal?! The “Last Man on Earth” actress wore her hair in a sleek angular bob and paired it with a strapless navy blue gown with major volume. Keep it up, babe!
Gwendoline Christie in a pale dress.
Who said pale people can’t wear light colors? Gwendoline Christie’s really light dress surprisingly didn’t drown her out despite the old adage that says it should.
Amanda Peet in Michael Kors.
With a red lip and high bun, Amanda Peet, whose husband is one of the men behind “Game of Thrones,” let her beauty do the talking. She wore a Michael Kors black gown with a stomach cutout that, while beautiful, let everything else stand out.
Danielle Brooks in Christian Siriano.
A few too many colors on Danielle Brooks’s in Christian Siriano gown, but at least she had the most important thing: confidence — and plenty of it.
Kiernan Shipka in Dior.
Kiernan Shipka couldn’t walk the red carpet until she finished her homework and boy are we glad that she did. “I crammed in so much last week because I knew I wasn’t going to have any time this week,” she admitted. The 15-year-old looked youthful in a Dior ensemble from the Fall 2012 collection with a gold mini dress and black pants underneath.
Laverne Cox in Calvin Klein Collection.
Not only did Laverne Cox refuse to be cut off by Ryan Seacrest before giving credit to Calvin Klein for her dress, she also made sure to specifically name Francisco Costa as the man behind it. The “Orange Is the New Black” actress wore a green dress and then added some mint heels for contrast.
Chelsea Peretti in Gabriela Cadena.
Gabriela Cadena’s an up and coming designer so it’s only fitting that Chelsea Peretti, an up and coming comedienne, chose a dress from the brand. The pattern seems like it was pulled off of curtains but the sheer at least added a little sex appeal.
Christine Baranski in hot pink.
Usually in suits on set, Christine Baranski popped in hot pink, earning a best dressed nod from Yahoo Style.
Tracee Ellis Ross in Zac Posen.
Usually one to take risks, it’s nice to see Tracee Ellis Ross do just that. Unfortunately for her, this time it fell flat. Wearing a tiered peach gown with checkered cutouts, the dress looked more fit for a teenager’s dress-up bin than the red carpet.
Zoe Kazan in red and white stripes.
Zoe Kazan appeared as a red and white striped peppermint sucking candy only in dress form. That’s such a good thing, though. So cool!
Tatiana Maslany in Bouchra Jarrar.
The “Orphan Black” star, who plays 10 different characters on the show, wore just one look on the red carpet, but that was all she needed. The white Bouchra Jarrar suit, paired with Sophia Webster shoes, was sophisticated yet still sexy with the bare chest.

How to do menswear right: Carrie Brownstein. The “Portlandia” star paired tapered black pants with high heels and styled her hair in some Old Hollywood curls.
Edie Falco in Prada.
Edie Falco traded her “Nurse Jackie” scrubs for a pink Prada dress and the pale pink gown’s certainly a better fit for her than the light blue cotton separates. The gown, an iteration from the same collection seen on every September magazine cover, had pleats cascading from the neckline and little beaded flowers throughout the skirt.
Ellie Kemper in Naeem Khan.
Ellie Kemper wore a dress of every tweenage girl’s dream. The Naeem Khan dress combined lots of lines and ROYGBV into one gown. She had her hair pulled back adding a little edge to the really childish dress.
Jessica Lange in J. Mendel.
Sure, Jessica Lange’s J. Mendel navy gown is chic, but it’s the sunglasses that she refused to take off for pictures on the step-and-repeat that deserves all the things.

Jessica Pare basically became Megan Draper at the Emmys. Blurring the lines between real life and “Mad Men,” the actress looked divine in a hot pink gown with a rose at the chest.
Lily Tomlin in a black dress and blazer.
Lily Tomlin, nominated for her Netflix series “Grace and Frankie,” probably should’ve chosen something younger and more boho, but the black dress with a blazer on top was still OK.
Uzo Aduba in Jonathan Cohen.
Uzo Aduba combined ombré and splatter paint into one with her Johnathan Cohen dress. The hot pink and black dress with a halter neck was like a Rorschach test for Barbie — you decide if that’s a good or bad thing.
Morena Baccarin in Reem Acra.
Morena Baccarin wore a dress that every single other star has already worn in the past. Boring for sure but let’s give credit where credit’s due: the actress still looked beautiful in the red Reem Acra gown.
Samira Wiley in Christian Siriano.
Samira Wiley was recently tapped as the face of Christian Siriano, so it comes as no surprise that they couple up on the Emmys red carpet. In a hot pink one-shoulder gown, the “Orange Is the New Black” star’s gown had a one-shoulder cape cascading down as well.
Sofia Vergara in St. John.
Sofia Vergara wore a custom St. John gown covered in exploding sequins, but, most importantly, she was wearing her own scent on the red carpet and made Ryan Seacrest smell her wrist.

Sophie Turner wore pants on the red carpet, showing that the young “Game of Thrones” star is an up-and-coming style star. If that doesn’t convince the series to keep on going forever and ever, then perhaps the fact that it’s the most popular show will.

Taryn Manning wore a dress that seemed like it was more fit for Elvira or a high school senior going through her goth phase.
Ariel Winter in Romona Keveza.
“Modern Family” actress Ariel Winter recently underwent a breast reduction. On her first red carpet since the surgery, she appeared confident in a red strapless Romona Keveza gown. There was so little that I could wear that was age-appropriate. I’d have to wear the dress that was super tight and formfitted everywhere because if I didn’t, it didn’t look good. I didn’t really have an option other than to wear fitted clothes,“ she told “Glamour” on dressing before.
Felicity Huffman in a halter dress with husband William H. Macy.
Felicity Huffman, who recently dyed her blonde hair to a much darker brunette shade, wore a navy blue pleated dress with a halter top. The dress, while great, would’ve been fantastic had it not been for her distracting beehive hairstyle.
If the 2015 Emmys proved anything, it’s that celebrities have magical abilities to sill look amazing on the red carpet no matter what Mother Nature throws at them. Held at the Microsoft Theater on Sunday in Los Angeles, California, stars posed on the step-and-repeat looking put together — and gorgeous — despite the 100 degree heat. Many got top marks for their style — hello Taraji P. Henson in Alexander Wang, Aubrey Plaza in Alexandre Vaulthier, and Ariel Winter in Romona Keveza — while some barely made the grade (sorry, Heidi Klum). Yet one thing’s for sure: everyone passed.
