This $60 blue off-the-shoulder dress from Zara has gone viral because everyone is wearing it
It reportedly takes Zara only two weeks to sketch out a design and then get it onto shelves around the world. That means new inventory is hitting stores pretty much every day. Yet for some reason, shoppers have gravitated toward a single, simple piece: a blue off-the-shoulder dress.
Lulu Krause began noticing last summer — when it originally went on sale for $60 (it’s not currently available) — that women all over New York were wearing the same thing. So the comedian started documenting every instance when she spotted friends and strangers in the chambray dress in an album on Facebook.
A year later, the piece is still pervasive — and not just in New York. Krause told Refinery29 that she gets about eight or nine submissions each week from “Vancouver, Greece, Spain, a lot from Italy, and across the United States.”
She’s even given the dress a try herself, which she described as an enlightening experience because it’s remarkably constricting. “I’d say you lose around 80 percent of your mobility in it — your arms can’t go above 45 degrees without compromising the intended shape of the garment. It’s impossible to hail a cab or wave violently (my two favorite pastimes),” the comedian said.
Still, on subways to streets to bars and beyond, it’s been caught on camera.
This isn’t the only omnipresent Zara piece. Last fall, a blue-and-white Zara print jacket also took off. An Instagram account, @thatcoat, was set up to track its many sightings in the wild.
