A Bloomingdale’s Glitch Accidentally Gifted Shoppers Up to $25,000 in Store Credit

After a glitch gifted a man thousands of dollars at Bloomingdale’s, the store has asked that he return a $10,000 pair of diamond earrings, a $5,000 watch, and a Louis Vuitton bag. The customer, along with other loyalty program members, was given store credit in the wrong amount.

“A small subset of Bloomingdale’s Loyallist participants were accidentally issued rewards gift cards with amounts that were clearly incorrect,” a spokeswoman for the department store said in a statement. “The company caught the mistake last week and is re-issuing replacement gift cards with correct amounts. The company is in contact with its customers and has apologized to those affected.”

One customer’s inquiry to Bloomingdale’s customer support on Facebook.

According to BuzzFeed, which first reported the bug, loyalty program members received emails on Friday, August 14, that granted them gift certificates in dollar amounts equalling their “Loyallist” points. For example, if a customer accrued 5,000 points, usually the equivalent of a $25 gift card, it would instead have $5,000 on it.

As for the 29-year-old shopper who went on a buying spree after receiving $25,000, he was surprised and skeptical of the amount at first, but successfully made the purchases. After he walked away with $17,000 worth of goods, Bloomies, which is owned by Macy’s, contacted him and was told that if he returned the items, he’d receive a $100 credit. The consequence for keeping his loot? Being booted from the Loyallist program.

On Bloomingdales.com, the store states it has "the right to cancel or refuse to accept any order placed based on incorrect pricing or availability information.“
