Actress Joey King’s KFC Prom Corsage Has to Be Smelled to Be Believed

It’s prom season, even in Hollywood.

Actress Joey King was homeschooled, but she went as her best friend’s date last year. You could say the two had a hen party, of sorts.

“I went to the garment district in Los Angeles and found something that was fashionable and not pricey. It was a short dress, black and white,” King tells Yahoo Style. “I contacted KFC, and I asked them to make two chicken corsages for me. I had heard these corsages were a thing.”

Here’s where being an actress comes in handy. King direct-messaged Kentucky Fried Chicken on Twitter, asking the company to create the corsages for her. “And they sent them to my best friend’s house. It was a surprise for her,” says King, who adds that her friend went bonkers with joy when she saw them. “We had chicken wings on our wrists all night.”

Fashion has always played a big role in King’s life and career. She’s now working with top stylist Sophie Lopez for her press tour, promoting her movie Going in Style. On this chilly day, Lopez dressed her in an effervescent Mackage coat, paired with jeans and heels.

“I walk in and there are racks and racks and racks of clothing. I don’t even know what to do with myself. She’s so organized. She put this together, this entire garment with my stuff, and she gave me a printout with all my outfits and the names of the designers. She gave me three backup outfits,” says King.

In the film, she plays Michael Caine’s granddaughter. The two vibed immediately, and after the shoot, Caine wrote King a letter, which she framed. Her clothes, too, made this a job she thoroughly enjoyed.

“It couldn’t have been easier. I’m not wearing skimpy, tight shorts. I’m wearing normal clothing, and I feel so comfortable. It’s nice and loose. I got to wear baggy jeans, which always make me feel comfortable. I got to wear these cute khakis. This wardrobe was easy to love,” she says.

King played Channing Tatum‘s daughter in 2013’s White House Down, directed by Roland Emmerich. It’s a role she’ll never forget. Here’s why: “I have these amazing Louboutins I got from Roland Emmerich for my 13th birthday. I was shooting White House Down and they were in my trailer. I broke them in, finally. They’re the most beautiful shoes ever,” she says.

Speaking of stilettos, King can now maneuver around in them for hours. That wasn’t always the case.

“When I’m home, I only wear sneakers. My mom wouldn’t let me wear heels until I was 13 years old. I respect my mom so much for that. I got my first pair of heels and wore them to this Nylon event, and I was dying after half an hour. It’s not as fun as it looks. But when you get older, you have to wear heels and make your legs look longer. I love wearing heels now,” she says.

King got her start on the Disney series The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, in 2006. Since then, she’s co-starred in Independence Day: Resurgence and 2011’s Crazy, Stupid Love. Next up for her: The Kissing Booth, with Molly Ringwald. For her, working in films has fringe benefits.

“So much of my closet is from movies. Even the stuff underneath — I take home the bras sometimes. Throughout this entire press tour, I’ve been wearing a bra from a movie I did when I was 15. I don’t even know the brand. I wish I could tell you,” she says.
