Feminist Statement or Insane Outfit? Amber Rose Wore Her Feelings On Her Sleeves at the VMAs

Amber Rose wore her feelings on her sleeves and legs and abdomen and really everywhere but her face at the 2015 MTV Music Awards on Sunday night. Rose and her good friend Blac Chyna wore skintight coordinating custom ensembles on the lavender carpet; they were colorful, in both the literal sense and in terms of the language printed on their clothing.
“Stripper,” “slut,” “bitch,” “whore,” and “gold digger” —a possible nod to Rose’s ex-fiancé Kanye West and his award winning 2005 hit — was the print of choice for Brittany DeShields and Iris Barbee Bonner of These Pink Lips, the designers behind the looks. Rose paired the one-of-a-kind piece with black strappy heels, studded earrings, and black bedazzled sunglasses. So while Miley Cyrus may have dressed up as an emoji IRL, the former model and her graffitied gang took to Twitter and Instagram to share that they instead covered themselves in the hateful comments they (sadly) receive via social media.
There were two more characters wearing matching outfits with various other profanities accompanying Rose and Chyna to the awards show as well. All together, they make a pointed statement about the power of unspoken words, but the text painted all over Rose’s long-sleeved one-piece wasn’t the only statement the 31-year-old made. She told pre-show host Kelly Osbourne: “I wish I was a whore. My social life would be so much more exciting.” On a more serious note, Chyna added, “We’re basically wanting to just paint a picture of what people say about us already. We’re just trying to embrace it.”

Rose is a self-proclaimed feminist (at least it says so on her Twitter page), so perhaps the 31-year-old opted to use herself as a walking billboard for the greater good, as part of the “Slut Walk” she kicked off in 2011 as a response to a police officer’s suggestion that ”women should avoid dressing like sluts” as a precaution against sexual assault. She’s collected nearly $50,000 of $65,000 on her Go Fund Me page and if anything can get the world’s attention to donate more money, it’s the looks above.
