Amy Schumer’s Mirror Selfie in a Minidress Has a Body-Positive Message
Amy Schumer is an outspoken advocate for body positivity, regularly posting messages on her social media accounts encouraging her followers to accept all body shapes and sizes.
She recently posted on Instagram a mirror selfie in which she’s wearing a striped, tight minidress that hugs and accentuates her curves. In the caption, she described that she was not feeling great but still felt that she looked great. “Today’s look. You can be sick and not be a size 2 and still feel great about yourself! #sickbutgrateful#thosesheetsdoe #ieatpastaalot.”

She also posted a picture of her midsection, which she captioned, “Solution areas! Try and only be kind to yourself today. Love yourself like you’re your own mother (@nikkiglaser told me that once).”

The comedian has always been incredibly vocal about causes she’s passionate about, but body acceptance is definitely one that is extremely personal to her.
At the Gloria Awards and Gala in 2014, she gave an empowering speech in which she detailed what she has overcome in life to get to the point of acceptance. She described a harrowing sexual encounter that caused her self-esteem and self-worth to plummet, but ultimately taught her to build herself up and disregard the hatred. “I am a woman with thoughts and questions and s*** to say. I say if I’m beautiful. I say if I’m strong. You will not determine my story — I will,” she said in her speech.
“I will speak and share and f*** and love, and I will never apologize to the frightened millions who resent that they never had it in them to do it. I stand here and I am amazing, for you. Not because of you. I am not who I sleep with. I am not my weight. I am not my mother. I am myself. And I am all of you, and I thank you.”
Schumer also made waves in 2015 when she posed nearly nude for the cover of Entertainment Weekly, covered in nothing but bottles of alcohol. Unlike many fashion and celebrity magazines, which regularly Photoshop their cover models to erase imperfections, the star was not digitally retouched in any way.

Extremely grateful that the magazine showcased her true body, Schumer took to Twitter to thank Entertainment Weekly.
I want to especially thank @EW for not airbrushing me. For real very cool. Thank you. Proud size 6 yo!

Despite how far society has come in moving toward body acceptance, the star still received criticism for her appearance in the trailer for her raunchy 2015 flick, Trainwreck.
In one review of the film, critic Jeffrey Wells of Hollywood Elsewhere focused more on Schumer’s looks than the film itself. He made cringeworthy comments, calling the actress “chubby” and “not conventionally attractive” and saying that he felt “there’s no way she’d be an object of heated romantic interest in the real world.”
Schumer fired back at critics’ hateful remarks with a series of humorous and empowering tweets and Instagram posts.
I am a size 6 and have no plans of changing. This is it. Stay on or get off. Kisses! pic.twitter.com/6IsEfFOwAD
