Ana Khouri Debuts First Ethically Sourced Emerald Collection
For the first time, Ana Khouri is collaborating with Gemfields to create a special five-piece capsule collection made of ethically-sourced emeralds from Zambia.
If you don’t know Khouri, she is part of a new wave of fine jewelry designers. She approaches her designs through the viewpoint of an artist versus that of a traditional commercial jeweler. As a result, Khouri creates jewelry that is more architectural in shape and often references artists such as Richard Serra and Alexander Calder. Khouri’s jewelry sculpts around the ears and body in fresh ways.
When Khouri launched her eponymous line in 2006, one of her biggest breakout pieces was her Mirian earrings, which curved into the ear. A new iteration of the Mirian earrings, this time in emerald, are part of the Gemfield collaboration.
Celebrities who’ve worn Khouri on the red carpet include Oscar-winning actresses Jennifer Lawrence and Lupita Nyong’o, as well as Emma Watson, Katy Perry, and Zo? Kravitz, among many others.
Although Khouri originally attended art school for sculpture, she later earned her stripes attending the Gemological Institute of America, Parsons School of Design in New York, and London’s Central Saint Martins.
Khouri’s jewelry has traditionally consisted of yellow gold and diamonds, which makes the new emeralds an exciting new colorful step for the Brazilian designer. Although, being ethically minded has always been a big part of Khouri’s ethos.
She is currently part of the Fair Trade Alliance for Responsible Mining and CFDA. Khouri shares with Yahoo Style more on why ethical sourcing is important to her: “I work with fair-mined gold as well as naturally and ethically sourced gems because it allows me to be certain of the responsible journey the material has taken all the way from their mines. Social, economic, and ecological responsibilities should be incorporated into brands on an everyday basis and be an extension of the person behind it. It’s part of the way I choose to live and that reflects on my brand.”
You can find Ana Khouri’s limited-edition emerald collection on ModaOperandi.com until July 16.
