Ashley Graham’s Simple Trick for Wearing a Strapless Bra Is a Style Saver
Tired of constantly pulling at your strapless tops all day to keep things, well, secure? Ashley Graham feels you.
Because strapless bras are notoriously troublesome: They pinch. They sag. They fall. And, above all, they frustrate. But Graham has a simple solution: Size down!
“Tip for wearing a strapless bra — go down a size only in the band. Keeps the girls lifted without suffocating them,” the beautifully body-positive model shared on Instagram — and if you can trust anyone to help keep your killer curves killing it without killing you all day, it’s probably her. She didn’t become the first plus-size model (more on that term later) to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated‘s swimsuit issue, snag a gig as a judge on the newest season of America’s Next Top Model, and inspire her own Barbie doll without amassing some stylish tricks of the fashion trade along the way.

Followers of the model were quick to show their appreciation for the practical advice, filling her comments section with a parade of thumbs-up emojis and thank-yous. “Pro tips from a legend,” wrote one. “Caption is a life saver omgggg,” posted another. “I need to try that!!! I’ve never been able to wear a strapless bra,” added still another.
But while your average model may have dropped such a pro tip on Instagram and called it a day, Graham was far from done providing style inspiration. While making the rounds on Wednesday to promote her new book, A New Model: What Confidence, Beauty and Power Really Look Like, she also managed to sport four very different and very awesome outfits in under 24 hours.

Early in the morning she was first seen at Good Morning America in a body-hugging, cream midi dress with matching blazer and spoke to the show hosts about just how important it is for parents to be conscious of how they speak to and around their children. “I really believe that parents need to know they are shaping the future of their children,” she said. “Words have power. The things that you say to yourself as a parent — the things that you say maybe even just one time to your children — they take it and they take it into their real world and into their life and beyond.”
Up next was an olive green, satin slip dress cinched at the waist with the same black corset belt from earlier for a stop at The View, where Graham offered an inspiring take on why, exactly, the term “plus-size” is a misogynistic one and should be retired. “The average size American women is a 14, and that means that the majority of this room is considered plus-size,” she said. “I don’t feel that we need to put a category on women because of a number inside of their pants; I just don’t think that it’s fair. We don’t do it to men.”

For her book signing at a New York City Barnes & Noble, Graham wore a sheer little black dress and strappy sandals. She also opened up to Entertainment Tonight after the signing about how she was ready to give up on modeling at the age of 19 before her mother talked her out of it. “Everything was about exterior; everything was about weight for me,” Graham confessed, detailing both modeling jobs and romantic relationships that came to an end because of her body type. Disheartened, she called her mother and said, “‘I can’t do it anymore; I’m coming home. This is it,’ and [her mother responded], ‘No, no, you’re not coming home. Your body is going to change someone’s life, and New York needs you. The fashion industry needs you,’ and I stayed,” Graham remembered.
The rest, as they say, is history. Thanks, mama Graham. Clearly the ability to inspire runs in the family.
