Hedi Slimane’s Saint Laurent collection was all about the 1980s, but even though the decade had a number of stylish women — Melanie Griffith, Madonna, etc. — Slimane seems to have been inspired by just a single muse: Dynasty’s Alexis Carrington.

Joan Collins, who played Carrington, told PBS in an interview about the fashion on the television show, “Pierre Cardin first came out with the big shoulder in 1983, and I said, ‘That is a great look’ … the shoulder pads, and then it makes the waist look smaller and your hips slimmer, and [they are] more flattering than an Italian waiter.”

Here, Carrington faces off against the Saint Laurent models. Everyone: Prepare your shoulders!
