‘Outlander’ Star Caitriona Balfe Has 1 Red Carpet Rule: ‘Comfortable Shoes. That Is Key’
Amid the madness of Golden Globes weekend — think parties, parties, and more parties — the annual British Academy of Film and Television Arts Tea Party in Los Angeles is a haven of calm, accompanied by an assortment of scones. Obviously.
And the event was even declared a selfie-free zone. Shockingly, people followed the rule.
Ryan Gosling, Tracee Ellis Ross in a floral Polite dress, Amy Adams in Dolce & Gabbana, and Emma Stone in Diane von Furstenberg all stopped by. The spread was fancy: three types of tea plus wine, Welsh rarebit, samosas, English cucumber sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, lemon tarts, and mini-eclairs.
Justin Timberlake came solo. Ron Howard sneaked up behind his daughter Bryce Dallas Howard and patiently waited for her to finish talking a photo.
Outlander star Caitriona Balfe, who hails from Ireland, had a leg up on L.A.’s suddenly stormy weather.
“Yeah, I think the last three times I’ve been in L.A., it’s rained. But driving here, I know how to drive. I just don’t know about the other people on the road when it’s raining. They don’t know how to drive in the rain. But it’s good. It was beautiful. I was driving down Laurel Canyon yesterday, and to see the banks just be so green and so full of grass, it’s gorgeous,” she says.
Plus, she’s now a veteran of awards season, so she was way more at ease. “I’m enjoying it more. I know what to expect, and it’s going to be fun. I think last time ’round, I was slightly terrified. You’re just like, ah, what’s happening? But it’s great. It’s fun. It’s a good place to be,” she says.
Her major rule: “Comfortable shoes. If you’re going to go dancing, you’ve got to have comfortable shoes. That is key.”
Meanwhile, Loving’s Joel Edgerton said he thinks Casey Affleck is a shoo-in for that award.
“On an ego level, it feels good,” he said of his nomination in the same category. “At the same time, it’s not lost on me how it works. Only one person can win, and I’ve seen Manchester by the Sea. I understand — Casey’s performance, plus the story and the screenplay and the way it’s executed. I’m just happy to be part of that conversation. I’m happy to be part of that nomination group or whatever. But to me, it’s not about a competition or about going, ‘Maybe I’m going to win this thing.’ I understand the way the cards are going to fall.”
Naomie Harris, another awards darling for her role in Moonlight, was happy to talk fashion. Maybe it’s because, all her acting chops aside, she’s also known for taking risks and having fun with her frocks. This time she wore Thom Browne.
“I think you want a dress that reflects your personality and that makes you feel happy. I think sometimes you don’t even need a mirror when you try on the right dress because it just changes the way you feel somehow. And I’m into comfort as well. It’s a long night sometimes, so you just want to be as comfortable as possible,” she says.
Harris gave us a hint about what to expect from her at the Golden Globes ceremony: “Metallic.”
