Can We All Just Agree to Stop Speculating on Celebrity Pregnancies?

Ayesha Curry looked absolutely smashing at last night’s ESPY Awards. Curry turned out to the event in a gorgeous textured merlot-hued dress with a high-low hem, which sparked quite a bit of buzz from some folks on the Internet — but not because the dress was beautiful. No, instead Curry’s look inspired speculation as to whether or not she is pregnant.
Instagram user yokothebasedgod wrote, “Looks like she packing a bump under that dress. “The dress makes her look wide around the middle,” joedmonds_ quipped. “She may be knocked up … I don’t see her just having her tummy hang like that,” user juicy___judy offered. Curry herself clapped back against the speculation, sharing a photo of her and her hubby, Steph Curry, at the event on Instagram. “She ain’t fat bruh, she just a lil thick,” she captioned the image with a bevy of emoji.
Fortunately, there were some commenters who found all the pregnancy talk ridiculous. “Why is it that us women attack 1 another for not looking like what the world defines as ‘perfect’?!” rachie____ wrote. “Y’all so used to seeing a fake body that you can’t appreciate a real one,” sisi_4_prez added. “A woman’s body is not always going to be perfect flat tummy, tiny waist, and a giant butt,” wrote iamqueenofmelanin.
This speculation surrounding the contents of Ayesha Curry’s womb comes right after Jennifer Aniston spoke out against celebrity tabloid culture, which is driven by scrutinizing women’s bodies. The actress penned an article for the Huffington Post, saying that this kind of pregnancy speculation is part of the discourse that makes women feel bad about their bodies. “The message that girls are not pretty unless they’re incredibly thin, that they’re not worthy of our attention unless they look like a supermodel or an actress on the cover of a magazine is something we’re all willingly buying into,” she wrote. “This conditioning is something girls then carry into womanhood. We use celebrity ‘news’ to perpetuate this dehumanizing view of females, focused solely on one’s physical appearance, which tabloids turn into a sporting event of speculation. Is she pregnant? Is she eating too much? Has she let herself go? Is her marriage on the rocks because the camera detects some physical ‘imperfection’?”
Curry herself has been the object of both aspiration and condemnation when it comes to her womanhood and how she carries herself, and I imagine it must be exhausting be picked apart by the media in this fashion. Pregnant or (as Curry coyly confirmed) not, bottom line is her body is not our business, and some opinions are better kept to oneself.
