Cara Delevingne: The Ultimate Bag Lady

Last night, Cara Delevingne did something that no woman, besides maybe a yoga teacher, has ever been able to do to me. She made me (a proud gay man) sweat. Okay, so, it all went down at the Mulberry x Cara Delevingne Collection at the company’s SoHo boutique. After I pushed my way through the scrum of squealing, iPhone-clutching fans and frantic paparazzi, I sat down for my exclusive one on one interview about her new bag. Always the charmer, Delevingne quickly made a fuss about my outfit: Janet Jackson ‘Rhythm Nation’ vintage t-shirt, my $5 Chinatown iPhone case, and my chipped nails. But when she reached over to swipe her finger over my bushy eyebrows, I really lost it. Think about it: The queen of the killer eyebrows is touching my eyebrow! Delevingne also boasts really great eye contact — that kind of fuzzy, we’re-having-a-genuine-moment kind. We actually enjoyed a genuine 4 minutes 21 seconds of moments while I interviewed her. Here’s how it all beautifully went down.
[We are sitting down. Cara touches my eyebrows, so I ask her about the amazingness behind hers.] What’s the secret behind your eyebrows being awesome?
I leave them! I used to get teased when I was younger really badly because of them. I hated my eyebrows my whole life. My mom was like, ‘If you ever touch them, I’ll kill you.’ So I didn’t.
I thank you for this, because you’re an eyebrow trailblazer and I think many young ladies are putting the tweezers down because of you!
Which makes me so happy!
So, give me the behind-the-scenes details about your collection.
I always knew what I wanted out of a bag. I went and asked my friends, and when we first started having meetings, I’d ask what all women wanted from a bag. Every woman is different and men as well. I wanted them to be unisex, but everyone was like, ‘Probably women will want them more,’ and I was like, ‘Okay, whatever.’ But I just wanted it to be able to be used for anything, anywhere.
How does your bag design factor into your life? They’re pretty big!
When I have a big bag, I can put my scripts in there, I can put a pair of shoes in there, I can put my drum sticks in there…
Speaking of drum sticks, do you have plans to record an album?
I hope so! Whether anyone wants to listen or not, I’m gonna record it.
Are you into karaoke? Have a favorite karaoke jam?
Yeah, of course! It’s gotta be some Prince. Or some Whitney. Because I never take it too seriously when I do it.
[This is when Cara notices then points to the scribbly heart tattoo on my bicep.]
It’s so sweet! I love that!
[I explain to Cara that the tattoo is a replica of how my everything aka Britney Spears signs her hearts, and that I am excited to attend Britney’s lingerie collection presentation this week.]
I love her. Oh my God, if I was there, I’d totally go.
[We are giggling like schoolgirls and now I’m feeling warmer. Too warm. Too many compliments from Cara! So, I say I’m going to take off my jacket because it’s hot.]
It’s so fucking hot in here! I’m wearing leather! Take it off, babe, take it off!
[I do as she tells me.] So, what do you always carry in your bag?
My adapters. My phones and their weird cases. I like to have little surprises in my bag — little random things. Eyebrow gel is always great. Lip balm. Egyptian magic cream for tattoos. I just got some new ones. And a pen and notepad are always useful — I like to write things down when I’m inspired.
