Christian Louboutin Is Making Boots With ‘Unicorn Skin’
Blame Rainbow Brite and Lisa Frank for putting rainbows and unicorns into the impressionable minds of kids, if you like: whimsical, mermaid- or unicorn-inspired multicolored designs are all the rage right now. Seen in eye shadow, highlighters, hair dye, unicorn tears, unicorn soaps, and Starbucks’ suddenly omnipresent Unicorn Frappuccino, the magical, multicolored patterns are everywhere. And now they appear in that paragon of red-soled, aspirational footwear, Christian Louboutin, which is embracing the trend as only it can: in the form of you-know-you-want-them-now high-heeled boots.
Stylist Samantha McMillen shared a first look at the one-of-a-kind Louboutins that change color as the wearer moves on Instagram yesterday. “I’m calling this ‘unicorn skin,'” she captioned what appears to be a Boomerang video showing a hand running back and forth across the shiny silver shoes to reveal hidden shades of green, red, pink, and gold. “Fancy new sequined boots @louboutinworld of course.”

Instagram users and fashion aficionados alike couldn’t be more excited about McMillen’s reveal, and commenters quickly responded to her post with a parade of ooh’s, aaah’s, wow’s, and heart-eye emoji. “Wow. Those are legit,” wrote one. “I know a unicorn who would rock the hell out of those,” posted another. “I need those,” said more than a few others.
Luckily, they won’t have to wait long to get their hands on a pair — assuming they can swing the near thousand dollar price tag, of course. The attention-grabbing ankle-length boots from Louboutin’s fall/winter 2017 collection are called the “Moulamax,” a representative for the brand confirmed to Yahoo Style. This particular version, created in ‘paillettes caresse’ (literally, ‘glitters stroked’) in silver/multi, will be available to the general public at Christian Louboutin boutiques and on christianlouboutin.com in June or July for $945.
Until then, we’ll just have to keep an eye out for them popping up on the well-heeled hooves of McMillen’s clients, who include sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning — and given that Elle revealed last year that McMillen’s nickname for her is “unicorn,” our money’s on the younger Fanning sister donning them for her red carpet debut. (Synergy, and all that.)
She’d certainly be in good company: when Saint Laurent‘s sparkling, rhinestone-covered glitter boots debuted on a Paris Fashion Week runway in February, none other than Rihanna wore them fresh-from-the-catwalk first. And we can think of far worse things than following in RiRi’s fashionable footsteps.
