Dancing With the Stars Week 7: All the Dancing You Can Handle, PLUS A Surprising Elimination

Outta the Park!

Riker Lynch and Allison Holker scored the highest point last week, and their main concern was staying at the top this week. As I’ve said before, Riker is one of the best dancers in the competition (he did it professionally as a kid after all!) so while I love and am rooting for my queen Rumer, I admit that I was definitely looking forward to what these two were going to do tonight. They chose a baseball-themed ‘20s quickstep, which was real old-timey, with lots of quick jumps and movements and even a surprise tap section. Riker wore a baseball outfit, except his pants were flared trousers instead of the usual sporty pants, and Allison wore a long, red, ruffled, backless dress accessorized with pearls. It was charming, but it ultimately lacked the oomph that has made their previous performances totally memorable. Still, they got a bunch of 10s – even one from hard-to-please judge Len, who had not given out any 10’s so far in the competition – but they really didn’t deserve it today, at least not for this choreography.
Save the Last Dance

Chris Soules and Witney Carson are one of the last of the “non-good” teams left in the competition (Robert & Kym are the other, and you know my allegiance lies with the budding lovebirds). Witney knows it, too, so for this week’s competition, she emphasized emotion and came up with a concept of a young woman in the 1940s having a last dance with her suitor before he boards the train and goes off to war. “This could really be our last dance,” she told Chris, to really drive the point home. They danced the foxtrot to a Sinatra song, with big, sweeping movements and a team of backup dancers. Chris wore a navy sailor suit, complete with hat, and Witney wore a yellow dress that felt a bit more 1950s, with a big ruffled skirt, and white lace gloves. It was all very sweet. The judges loved it, but they scored the same score they did last week. Their time in the competition is definitely coming to a close.
At the Soda Fountain

Last week, Rumer Willis and Val Chmerkovskiy danced to “Bootylicious,” and the judges were upset that their dance was “too vulgar.” This week, they came back with the perfect all-American choreography, set at a 1950s soda shop. They both wore black and white spectator shoes – Rumer wore heels, of course – and were the perfect picture of clean, classy, and classic. Her black and white sparkly halter dress with a pink petticoat skirt was just the right amount of sexy that you can bring home to mom. Meanwhile, Val was in full soda-jerk boy mode, with a short sleeve white shirt, bow tie, and suspenders. Their performance was refreshing, but the judges seem to always give them a harder time than everyone else, and it shows in the scores. I just want them to be fair, that’s all.
Gold Standard

Noah Galloway and Sharna Burgess are also one of the couples whose time on the show is slowly counting down. They are charming, yes, but judges are still more concerned with saying things like, “You may have half the limbs of any man out there, but you’re twice the man!,” to Noah, which, like, what? So they did a jazz routine set in the 1970s. Noah dressed as a pimp in a brown suit with a red satin shirt underneath, and Sharna dressed like Foxy Cleopatra (Beyoncé’s character in Austin Powers 3) in a liquid bronze jumpsuit that resembled a pair of bell bottoms and a halter top. She also wore her hair in an afro style. Their performance was fun and focused mostly on theatrics, with lots of subtle movements and pelvic thrusts that while fun, left a lot of dancing off the dance floor. Well, at least I thought so, because the judges totally lost it and then Carrie Ann gave them a 10 which blew my mind so intensely, it’s a miracle I am able to even write this at all. They ended up scoring a 37 out 40, which puts them in second place. Nothing even makes sense anymore.
Bésame Mucho

Robert Herjavec and Kym Johnson almost went home last week, so this week they were determined to leave their mark on the competition, i.e. the perfect time to do a super sexy and sultry dance like the Argentine Tango to showcase their amazing chemistry and bring in the votes. So they stepped on stage and, amid stark lighting, attempted to seduce each other to the jazziest version of Cameo’s “Word Up” that you never even thought was possible. Robert wore all black, a shirt, a vest and trousers, and Kym was in a super sexy cutout dress that was basically a swimsuit with a fishtail. Still, she looked beautiful, and he looked handsome and they almost kissed a million times, which I’m sure must’ve driven the audience crazy. I know they won’t stay here for long, so I cherish every single time they are on screen so much!
If You See Something (Awesome), Say Something

Last week, after the show ended and the dancers were rehearsing for tonight’s Anniversary Special, Derek Hough kicked a light and broke his toe, and then while wobbling backstage, he fell and sprained an ankle. (Does someone have a voodoo doll of him somewhere? How can someone have so much bad luck?) So new dancer Sasha was brought in to dance with Nastia Liukin. Not that Derek would go gently into that good night, of course. He choreographed the dance and figured out a way to include himself in it. When we finally hit the stage, it was set up to look like an NYC subway, and Nastia, Derek, and Sasha, along with some backup dancers, started off with a really great seated routine, which then gave way to Nastia and Sasha actually dancing. Nastia wore a really cute black and white summer dress with little black loafers, the kind that you see millions of girl wear in Williamsburg all the time. Sasha, meanwhile, wore a simple button down shirt, black trousers and sneakers. This was maybe the best choreography of the season. Nastia was finally dancing and the gymnastics tricks were kept to a minimum. It was just marvelous!
Hi-YAH!

Willow Shields and Mark Ballas danced a futuristic jazz to MGMT’s “Electric Feel,” and it was Ninja themed for some reason. They wore ninja outfits, except Willow was draped in jewels. As usual for them, it was super boring. How can they make ninjas boring? It’s like a special gift.
Dance Off: Willow & Mark vs. Riker & Allison

Riker and Allison had second place, so they chose to battle against Willow and Mark. Then, it was Willow and Mark’s turn to pick what they would dance to, and for some reason they picked Salsa, which is the worst-performing dance that poor Willow has done so far, because she just lacks rhythm. It’s also weird because Ryker and Allison are so good at this! Allison definitely had the most stripper-esque costume of the night: a barely-there fringed concoction that I’m pretty sure had seen its fair share of private dances. Willow, meanwhile, had an appropriate little blue suit with fringes at the bottom and little shorts underneath. Except at the end, the judges all unanimously chose Willow and Mark as the winners (she did do an impressive split at the end, but still, what?!).And then. The impossible happened. Willow and Mark were eliminated before Chris and WItney! THIS WORLD IS CRAZY!
Dance Off: Robert & Kim vs. Noah & Sharna

Noah and Sharna picked Robert and Kym, and Robert and Kym chose the Cha Cha, so off the overlay skirts went and both Sharna and Kym were left in really cute, sparkly dresses. Noah and Sharna matched their outfits, her dress and his shirt in the same shade of turquoise, while Robert went with the classic white shirt and tuxedo pant that was a classy match to Kym’s diamond sparkle mini dress. They were both adequate, although you could tell Robert was a little nervous because he looked stiffer than usual. The judges were split evenly between both of them, so it was Len’s vote that decided who won, which was, not surprisingly, Noah and Sharna, who are fast emerging as the judges’ favorite underdogs.
Dance Off: Rumer & Val vs. Chris & Witney

Rumer and Val and Chris and Witney were the last two couples, and they danced the Foxtrot. Rumer wore a beautiful long, red dress, and Val showed the most skin out of everyone in the show in an unbuttoned black shirt. Chris and Witney also matched their outfits, with Witney wearing a blue silk gown, and Chris, an ombre blue shirt. Their dances were both great, but it was clear that Rumer and Val were the real winners, and the judges agreed!
It’s week 7, and the show is really starting to heat up. There wasn’t exactly a theme this week, per se, but each piece of choreography channeled a different era. The couple with the highest score received immunity, while the other six couples participated in a dance-off, one against one, with the winner getting an extra two points to their final score. It’s like, you watch a show for the pretty costumes, and then suddenly, you have to learn algebra or something and nothing makes sense.
The problem is, now that there’s only a few teams left, anything can happen, which we realized when all the weakest links turned out to be safe this week – you should’ve seen Chris and Witney’s face when they said they were safe, and they just stood there, because they were both so certain they were going home, AS THEY SHOULD HAVE! So in the end, it was Rumer and Val and Willow and Mark left on the stage, while I was left yelling, “What the heck?!” at my computer screen. Next week there is a double elimination and my god, I am so scared at what might happen–I guess that’s why I can’t miss it! Now, on to the dancing– there was plenty of it.
