Even Kylie Jenner Had to Stand at Alexander Wang’s Show
Kylie Jenner almost pulled it off.
The Lip Kit queen of Calabasas had managed a deceptively stealth entrance at the Alexander Wang show, partly because of her new shaggy haircut, and partly because the place — a ramshackle former concert hall in Harlem — was already packed with wall-to-wall fashion kids. Alas, Tyga blew her cover, because wearing an acid yellow fuzzy coat tends to do that. As the duo were pushed by bouncers towards the front of the room, interns and assistants finally realized King Kylie was in their midst, and mayhem ensued.
Not that it wasn’t already nuts in there. Though the show’s tagline was #NOAFTERPARTY, the crowd was offered Peroni beer and a DJ set by Metro Boomin, the rising hip-hop star fresh off last night’s Fendi riot. Sofia Richie huddled with Teyana Taylor in a closely guarded corner, while Brooklyn Beckham went almost incognito in a pale pink hoodie. (His mom’s runway collection is Monday morning.)
The baby celebs (hi, Ansel Elgort!) were cute, but the real wow-factor was the sight of fashion royalty shoved against the raised runway like CBGB strung-outs circa 1979. Front row regulars like Zoe Kravitz and Bryanboy plus Vogue editors, French heiresses, and K-Pop stars… it didn’t matter who you were, you were standing in the Alex Wang mosh pit like everyone else. “I’ve never done Coachella,” mused New York Fashion Week founder Fern Mallis, who was crammed next to Australian Insta-star Lily May Mac, “and now I’ll never have any desire to — this is pretty much how it goes.”
Except for the whole clothes-instead-of-music thing, though on that front, Wang really delivered. With ’80s nods to Heathers, Hells Angels, and Princess Di, the fall collection was aggressive, assertive, and surprisingly nimble in terms of age. (The studded stiletto boots and pearl-hemmed coats were especially sweet for fashion assistants and their senior bosses.) Kendall Jenner’s all-black ensemble got a #ProudMama shoutout from Kris Jenner, while Bella Hadid wore a “Night of Treason” T-shirt that will soon be knocked off everywhere.
When the lights came up, the crowd lingered for a second. Was it a trick? Was there an after-party at the #NOAFTERPARTY show? Not exactly — until models and showgoers strutted into the McDonald’s on 145th Street, stunning the high school kids working behind the counter. “Are you, like, shooting a movie?” asked a burger-flipper as mega-models like Binx Walton and Irina Kravchenko strolled by in full hair and makeup.
Yeah, dude. You can see the whole thing on @alexanderwang’s Instagram…
