Even Selena Gomez Faces Nasty Body Comments

Even PYTs aren’t immune.
When Selena Gomez posted a photo to Instagram of herself with a friend on a boat in a bathing suit and cutoffs, the comments weren’t, “OMG I’m so jealous,” or “that bathing suit is so cool,” or even “I thought you were dating Zedd why are you canoodling that man in a bucket hat?” (which would also be inappropriate) they were instead focused on her body.
Just a few of the body shaming comments.
Between the typical declarations of love and “firsts,” Gomez was met with many users calling her fat and asking if she’s gained weight. Enough people pointed this out, that among the nearly 6,000 people individuals sounding off, Gomez noticed.

In response, she posted another snapshot in a more flattering position (well, for her figure at least) with the caption, “I love being happy with me yall #theresmoretolove ” But seriously, what are these people seeing? Obviously lying down is a great angle for anyone, but she’s still a very small human. You can barely even say she’s “curvy.”
Interestingly, when Pink was met with similar negativity this week, one of her responses on Twitter was, “and my hubby says “it’s just more to love baby” (and then I smack his hand off my booty cause we’re in a supermarket).”
What’s funny is that both Gomez and Pink are smaller than the average American woman, who is a size 14, yet they’re met with attacks for being slim and fit. Luckily, they seem to be confident in themselves and haven’t let the disparaging remarks get to them but I assume they’re hurtful regardless. Do social media users not think that there’s an actual human behind the celebrity account so it’s therefore socially acceptable to treat them with such disrespect? Are they just jealous and taking out their own insecurities? Another body shaming incident seems to happen all too often (Kelly Clarkson, Giuliana Rancic—skinny shaming counts—Amy Schumer, just to name a few). Maybe instead of all the defamatory talk, let’s change the conversation.
