The Fashion Comparisons Between 'Younger' and 'Sex and the City' Are Undeniable
Younger — the hit TV Land show starring Sutton Foster and Hilary Duff — is heading into its fourth season on Wednesday. To celebrate the new season, Yahoo Style decided to delve into the uncanny fashion comparisons between the characters on this Darren Star-produced show and his ’90s hit Sex and the City.
The similarities aren’t entirely surprising considering the ties between Star and Patricia Field, Younger‘s current costume consultant who also worked on Sex and the City — but it’s still worth dissecting.
For those who aren’t too familiar with the premise of the show, it’s about a single, 40-year-old mother, Liza, played by Foster who — after a fallout with her gambling-addicted husband — gets divorced and seeks means to support herself and their only daughter, Caitlin (Tessa Albertson), through a new career in book publishing. Liza meets a young, attractive tattoo artist, Josh (Nico Tortorella), who mistakes Liza for someone in her 20s. This encounter prompts Liza to believe she can pass as a 26-year-old book publicist — fooling everyone around her, including her soon-to-be boyfriend Josh, work superiors Diana (Miriam Shor) and Charles (Peter Hermann), and co-worker Kelsey (Duff).
At the end of the third season, Liza’s big little secret finally comes to light. But before we find out what happens next, take a look below and see for yourself how these Younger characters bear remarkable resemblances to the sartorial style choices once seen on the Sex and the City cast — Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, Samantha, Mr. Big, and Aidan.
Liza Miller and Carrie Bradshaw
Liza’s career is in book publishing, while Carrie’s is in fashion journalism. Both characters live in a Darren Star-bred TV show and make remarkably similar fashion choices, although not technically the same designer brands. Carrie often sported the latest Gucci, Dior, or Prada apparel, while Liza does not — but they both consistently wear bold, colorful threads and are unafraid of mixing unlikely prints. They don’t stray far from feminine colors and patterns like pink and floral. But essentially, Liza is the modern-day Carrie — without the designer price tag.
Kelsey Peters and Charlotte York
Kelsey and Charlotte are both modest in character and their fashion sense can best be described as “high-end preppy,” aka mirroring brands like Club Monaco, J.Crew, etc. They always look pulled together, classy, and elegant. However, they don’t tend to take bold sartorial choices either in terms of color and style. Instead, they’re often seen wearing neutral colors and classic styles, like a white oxford shirt, tailored tan trousers, or a cream Victorian blouse as shown above.
Diana Trout and Samantha Jones
Two words: Power Look. Both women are powerful and career-focused and are confident, self-assured, dominant forces in their respective media industries (book publishing and public relations). This confidence is extended to their similar fashion choices, often opting for form-fitting, sexy silhouettes that cinch at the waist. Both women further accessorize their power looks with bold earrings and statement necklaces, and they are never without high heels.
Maggie and Miranda Hobbes
Although Maggie and Miranda are in drastically different careers — Maggie is an artist, whereas Miranda is a high-powered partner at a law firm — both link up when it comes to their style. The two characters tend to opt for more masculine, gender-fluid clothing, such as crisp white button-up shirts, black blazers, trousers, and skirts. Coincidentally (or maybe not), Maggie’s character is a lesbian whereas Cynthia Nixon, who plays Miranda, is a lesbian in real life.
Josh and Aidan Shaw
Josh and Aidan each play the resident “bad boy” love interests to their leading ladies, Liz and Carrie. Although Josh sports tattoo sleeves and a slicked-back coif and Aidan is more scruffy, their styles are both casual in nature. What is their signature look? A simple T-shirt and blue jeans.
Charles Brooks and Mr. Big
Charles and Mr. Big are the buttoned-up, clean-cut love interests to Liza and Carrie. They are both high-powered business executives who can always be seen sporting a sharp, well-tailored suit and tie — ready to charm any leading lady.
In the end, will Charles or Josh win Liza’s heart? If it goes anything like Sex and the City, we might know the answer.
