When Cara Delevingne and company paraded down the runway show for the Chanel finale yesterday carrying hand-painted protest signs with slogans like “Ladies first!” and “History is her story,” little did these pretty young things know that the fashion world had found their favorite new muse: Gloria Steinem. The 80-year-old “mother of feminism,” co-founder of Ms. Magazine, and the person who gave us snappy bon mots like, “If the shoes doesn’t fit, must we change the foot?” and “A woman without a man is like a fish without bicycle,” also happens to be one stylish lady.

With her lionesque mane of hair, oversized owl-like glasses, and smart looking outfits - flared jeans, body suits and statement-making belts - Steinem made feminism sexy, stylish and strong at a time when society was afraid of the F word. She accessorized it with a defiant kick ass attitude. (She once went undercover in a Playboy Bunny suit to report on one of Hugh Hefner’s clubs for an investigative piece.)

We think Gucci’s suede tunic and jeans combo would have been perfect for one of Steinem’s ERA marches and clearly the designers at Pucci were channeling a ’70s Steinem when they sent models out in low-slung suits, enormous shades and hair parted down the middle. In fact, we are certain that our favorite feminist, rabble rouser, and galvanizer would have jumped to be front-and-center at Chanel’s girl power revolution.
