A$AP Rocky Says Katy Perry's Favorite Designer Jeremy Scott Changed His Life
Documentaries are supposed to be serious things. Old-people things. Smart-people things. People who have fun watch comedies and action movies, but people who enjoy reading The New Yorker and going to the theatre watch documentaries. To make a documentary about something is to turn it into a serious pursuit: it legitimizes said topic.
And so the fashion documentary category has been on overdrive lately, usually with designers, editors, or moments in fashion that are already heralded as meaningful, people who are considered influential. And now we have a documentary about designer Jeremy Scott, who in recent years has made a name for himself dressing Katy Perry at the Super Bowl, sending Barbie and Looney Tunes-inspired clothing down the runway, and outfitting everyone in Madonna’s latest music video. He is the ultimate celebrity fashion designer.
Jeremy Scott: The People’s Designer tells the tale of Scott from his upbringing in Missouri to his success in the runways at New York Fashion Week under his own label, and Milan, where Moschino, where he serves as Creative Director, shows. Listen, we love a Jeremy Scott fashion show; they are fun and ridiculous (in the best possible way), and always ruffle a few feathers (those of Tweety Bird and Foghorn Leghorn, to be exact). But watching A$AP Rocky say, “Jeremy Scott changed my life,” feels a little…much. But maybe those Jeremy Scott for Adidas high-tops with the wings on them really made the young rapper/actor feel like he could fly and he could be whoever he wanted to be! And who are we to judge? The documentary also features Miley Cyrus, who says his clothes are “kind of empowering, in a way,” and Rita Ora, even though as far as we know Ora’s opinion about fashion counts for exactly nothing.
Will we watch this film? Totally! Scott is a nice guy, and he definitely worked very hard to get to where he is today. But perhaps the level of holiness needs to be toned down a bit. After all, what is “the people’s designer” anyway? Because neither the Jeremy Scott nor the Moschino wares he designs come cheap!
