Goodbye Brooklyn Bootie. Hello High Boots!
I live in Brooklyn but over the last few months of winter I’ve wanted to run back to the English countryside. You see I can’t walk down the street in my neighborhood without seeing a parade of chicks clomping around in short boots. Skinny jeans, an oversize parka and ankle boots seems to be the uniform of choice amongst the hipster Brooklyn set.
Last week I was in LA and out there the warm weather has every girl in town dressed in jean cut-offs or gauzy hippie dresses and no matter what, they accessorize the look with a pair of ankle boots. Well I’m not having it anymore. I don’t care if you are Reese Witherspoon or Miranda Kerr! The booties need to be retired. Now!

So today I was excited to see a pair of real high boots at the Frame Denim presentation. The super cool Swedish label, which debuted as a jeans brand in 2013, is now a bona fide lifestyle brand. For their winter/ fall 2015 collection, entitled 1978 (the year founders, Jens Grede and Erik Torstensson was born), the designers featured stylish staples from the “Me Decade” including a knee-length suede coats, silk shirts, flared jeans, and ¾ length pencil skirts, all paired with high boots.
Frame is not the only label bringing back the high boot. Givenchy, Gucci and Rodarte all showed above-the-knee versions for spring and at the Dior Couture show, the ladies modeled colorful vinyl thigh-high boots. I’ll take Kinky boots over ankle warmers any day.
So for all you ladies who have been living the low life, how do you wear those long, lean boots? At Rodarte, the designers paired them with tight jeans for a rock star look. Proenza Schouler went for a cool ladylike look with super high boots under a mid-length pencil skirt. Leave it to Givenchy to make it all about sex and skin with their tight thigh-high boots.
High boots are sexy for sure buy they don’t have to scream hooker. You can work them into your everyday life. As with anything with a strong personality, pairing them something less dramatic is key. So if you want to try over-the-knee boots, don’t wear it with a tight mini skirt or a crop top. If you want to go ‘70s hippie, wear them with a loose feminine dress. As much as I love this trend for spring, I don’t think it can carry through to summer. But please, don’t bring back the ankle bootie come June. Why not try something new? Like clogs…
