Gwyneth Paltrow Makes Rare Fashion Misstep

Gwyneth Paltrow rarely misses a beat when it comes to fashion. But on Wednesday night, the actress wore a pink jumpsuit that won’t be making any best-dressed lists (her ability to turn rap songs into Broadway ballads, however, has been met with rave reviews).

Appearing on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, the 42-year-old, who often takes game-changing style risks—who can forget that Antonio Berardi dress with such sheer panels underwear wasn’t an option?— attempted to pull off a flesh-colored bodysuit with ruffle detailing on the chest. Paltrow, who works with Tracy Anderson and a slew of celeb chefs to make sure her body is as tight as it can be, can make just about anything look good, but this Elie Saab piece just doesn’t work: the color blends in with her light skin tone and the thin fabric also reveals her Spanx, pulling in all the wrong places.

Tilda Donner thinks that it looks like a “a mental patient uniform from a Wes Anderson film,” Mia Lardiere is having “flashbacks to female anatomy diagrams in high school” from looking at it, and Elaine Liner wonders if Paltrow is wearing human skin.

Paltrow has been a force behind bringing jumpsuits back in vogue. For years, she’s championed the tough to pull off silhouette so it’s all the more shocking to see her wearing one so poorly. In fact, it’s possible that the Ellie Saab incident could mark a turning point in the trend’s life and undo the entire decade she’s spent pushing the style.
Yet, while there was negative reaction to her outfit, per usual, the Goop founder’s blonde hair was perfectly blown out and her subtle smoky eye and light pink lip looked amazing under the bright studio lights, making up for and totally distract from the fashion faux pas.
