Here’s Why Bella Hadid Went ‘Bright’ at Monday’s CFDAs, Plus Other BTS Scoop
On Monday night, Seth Meyers described the annual CFDA awards as the “Oscars in the fashion industry.” He wasn’t wrong. A-list celebrities from Nicole Kidman to models Bella Hadid and Heidi Klum turned up to celebrate the industry’s biggest names and honor the activism and work of Gloria Steinem, Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood, and actress Janelle Monáe.
Hadid showed up on the red carpet in a dazzling bright-pink blazer dress designed by Virgil Abloh of Off-White.
“I’m not one to wear a lot of color, and now so I am, this is the one look that I am so excited about, and I love how bright it is, how amazing it is,” Hadid told Yahoo Style.
Abloh, meanwhile, was inspired by something Hillary Clinton was known for wearing and was in fact a wardrobe staple for her. “I think it’s a cool statement for young girls and young women to see a power suit again,” he says.
Plus, Hadid gave it her special twist. “That’s an exciting vibe to bring on the red carpet. Especially hers: youth, delicate, supermodel … a million covers every month,” he says.
Coach creative head Stuart Vevers — who won big later in the night — gushed about working with Selena Gomez. “It’s been great, she’s amazing. I’m really proud to work with her, we have loads of fun and I can’t wait. Our first imagery will be coming out sometime soon, sometime this month,” he says.
The ever-elusive Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen quietly glided along the red carpet, wearing their line The Row (of course) and smiling politely at cameras as they moved toward the ballroom — but otherwise avoiding all reporters.
Heidi Klum wore a long white gown by Zac Posen, although she didn’t come to the red carpet without a bit of style commentary: “Now [it’s all about] the uglier the better. … The uglier the prints are …. the better they are.” Perhaps that’s why she kept it monochrome.
Brooke Shields wore a English-style floral-print gown by Sachin & Babi and gave the brand full credit for making her look that good. “It’s the designers who know how to dress women and who understand [that] independent women can be beautiful and strong … as well as feminine and they know how to dress [our] body.”
Cannes winner Diane Kruger wore a stunning blue velvet and green sparkling gown by Monse, while Kidman kept it simple and elegant in a long black and crystal-embellished gown by Oscar de la Renta. In terms of men’s fashion, Matt Bomer wore a dapper hunter green suit by Todd Snyder, while interior designer Nate Berkus kept it sharp in a white-and-black tux, whose jacket is also shop-able on J.Crew.
His style tip for guys: “I would say, always keep it clean.”
On a more serious note, Planned Parenthood has gotten plenty of attention on red carpets of late, which Cecile Richards appreciates.
“There’s no way to calculate the difference it has made to have the most famous people in the fashion industry wear pins to runway shows saying ‘Fashion Stands With Planned Parenthood.’ I think it says something about being that women design for women and believe in empowered women and that to me has been really the theme,” she says.
As for the winners: it was a great night for Raf Simons. The Belgian designer took home both the Womenswear and Menswear Designer of the Year Award for Calvin Klein. The elusive Demna Gvasalia, hailing from the country of Georgia, founder of Vetements and creative director of Balenciaga — the guy who brought you the look-alike Ikea bag — was awarded the International Designer award. Vevers, from the U.K., took home the Accessory Designer of the Year for Coach.
When Yahoo Style asked Vevers how he was feeling before the ceremony, he admitted that he was “nervous,” of course.
Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia of Monse took home the Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent, and Kenneth Cole was awarded the very first Swarovksi Award for Positive Change. The Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Rick Owens.
