Jewelry Designer Eddie Borgo Launches Industrial-Strength Handbags
Eddie Borgo is getting into the bag game. The designer, whose line of eponymous line of costume jewelry is favored by every fashionista in the city, has expanded his accessories outreach. At an appointment yesterday in Paris, he took great pride in showing off what he called his “new babies.” Comprised of five different styles in a variation of colorways, the new Eddie Borgo bag collection was inspired by a mix of vintage references and sleek industrial design. The durable yet lightweight pieces were created with the modern working woman in mind. Take for example the Dean, which is made of a rubber-powder-treated leather so it will never scratch and can easily be cleaned with a soft cloth. All of the bags feature custom hardware that has a purpose like the triangle-shaped inserts at the base of each bag so it never touches the ground and the exoskeleton-like hinged flap of the Colt which is freakishly easy to open and close considering its construction. Each “baby” can carried three different ways as well: via handle, cross-body, or a clever hand strap that is at the base. “For when your bag gets too heavy,” notes Borgo.
The line also includes the Vic—a minaudière that comes with its own detachable leather case in case you want to wear it on your shoulder or as a hand-held clutch. (Natalie Portman was the first to trot it out at this year’s Vanity Fair Oscar party.) There’s also the sleek and simple Lou, inspired by your grandmother’s cigarette case and compacts from the ’50s which holds your credit card, cash, and also features a mirror inside.
The bags aren’t cheap—ranging anywhere $700 to $2,800—but hopefully they will last forever. (Cost per wear is always my favorite argument when making a hefty purchase!) Borgo wisely polled his female friends before starting this new venture. “They all needed something that was good on the run, that wouldn’t break or scratch and could fit all of their technology.” As one of those ladies, I salute you sir!
