Lily Collins Couldn't Carry Her Clutch and Walk at the Same Time in Her Golden Globes Gown
Too much is never enough. And so we bring you more backstage juice from the Golden Globes, where stars let their hair down and — just as the rest of us would do — caught up with friends, had a few drinks, and watched the clock. Many rely on their better halves to help them out. With five minutes until showtime, Keri Russell used her partner, Matthew Rhys, as a human shield on her way into the ceremony.
In the ballroom, J.J. Abrams showed Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataki a photo on his phone and it appeared to be of his kids. Meanwhile, it was a Trolls reunion with Anna Kendrick having an intense conversation with her co-star Justin Timberlake and his wife, Jessica Biel.
During a commercial break, Vera Wang-clad Sarah Jessica Parker ambled over to Thandie Newton’s table for a chat with the Monse-wearing Westworld star. Newton also had a warm embrace with Zoe Saldana.
As Lily Collins discovered, fashion is work and she can’t walk and simultaneously hold her clutch because she needed both hands to move while wearing her frothy Zuhair Murad dress. Later on, she also got animated with Timberlake.
The singer and Trolls star, meanwhile, was quite the social butterfly. He also chatted with Felicity Jones. The Rogue One star then moved to gabbing with Sam and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, while Kerry Washington was all smiles.
Winner Viola Davis passed Eddie Redmayne on the stairs and he applauded her before heading to the bar. Davis also got admiring smiles from Lion stars Dev Patel and Sunny Pawar. Chris Pine raced out of the ballroom and into the bar/cheese area like he was participating in a fire drill.
That Kristen Wiig and Steve Carell bit about the tragedy of animated films cracked up Viggo Mortensen, who chuckled while watching them on stage. He then did a squat to stretch out. Hey, it’s a long day.
Midway through the show, Denzel Washington looked like maybe he’d rather be elsewhere, drumming his fingers on his wife’s chair. Stars came to say hello to Washington, including Pharrell. As for SJP, she was deep in conversation with Amanda Peet, who wrote the play The Commons of Pensacola that starred the Divorce actress. Natalie Portman was looking around, scanning the crowd.
During yet another commercial break, Jones and Claire Foy had a proper girly catch-up in the ladies room. Janelle Monae checked her waistline in the mirror. Brie Larson, seeing the long line for the ladies’s room, let out a sigh. We feel you, we feel you. A woman approached Portman and asked the Prada-clad Jackie star how she’s doing. “I’m really good,” replied Portman, who during the show posed for a snap with Emma Stone.
