Kerry Washington Isn’t Angry Over This Excessively Retouched Mag Cover, She’s Disappointed

It’s happened time and time again. A actress or a model poses for a magazine and gets Photoshopped beyond belief to “look better”.
Some women welcome it (after all, lots of ladies would be happy with slimmed down thighs and their fine lines and wrinkles brushed over) but the majority take a stand.
Lena Dunham went as far as banning magazines from ever retouching her again and Zendaya successfully had an issue pulled from stands after she called out the publication for heavily editing her image.
But Kerry Washington’s response is a lot more, well, graceful. The “Scandal” actress, who isn’t prone to speaking out and causing drama, is the latest victim of a magazine’s over-enthusiastic editing. Rather than voicing her anger, she’s voiced her disappointment - which is so much more effective.

The actress, who posed for US magazine ADWEEK, took to Instagram to call out the publication for Photoshopping her on their cover. In the photo, the actress is almost unrecognisable - her facial features have been altered that much.
“So…You know me. I’m not one to be quiet about a magazine cover,” the mum-of-one wrote captioned an Instagram photo of the cover.
“I always celebrate it when a respected publication invites me to grace their pages. It’s an honor. And a privilege. And ADWEEK is no exception.
“I love ADWEEK. It’s a publication I appreciate. And learn from. I’ve long followed them on Twitter. And when they invited me to do a cover, I was excited and thrilled. And the truth is, I’m still excited. I’m proud of the article. And I like some of the inside images a great deal. But, I have to be honest…I was taken aback by the cover.
“Look, I’m no stranger to Photoshopping. It happens a lot. In a way, we have become a society of picture adjusters - who doesn’t love a filter?!? And I don’t always take these adjustments to task but I have had the opportunity to address the impact of my altered image in the past and I think it’s a valuable conversation.
“Yesterday, however, I just felt weary. It felt strange to look at a picture of myself that is so different from what I look like when I look in the mirror. It’s an unfortunate feeling.”
Kerry said that she was more than happy with other images in the magazine, which were less obviously edited. [Photo: Instagram/Kerry Washington]
But despite Kerry’s woes, the publication didn’t see anything wrong with the cover shot. Editorial director James Cooper told Yahoo that the photo is an “accurate representation of how Kerry Washington appeared on set with the lighting used in the photo shoot.
“This issue was addressed well before publishing and the editorial decision was to not alter her features or darken/or lighten any of her skins tones whatsoever,” he said.
It wasn’t just the cover that Kerry was unhappy with. She also used the Instagram essay to address the missing sections of her interview, which were discussed with the journalist but left out of the article - despite the fact that she deemed them as incredible important to her.
“There are a few things we discussed in the interview that were left out,” she wrote. “Things that are important to me (like: the importance of strong professional support and my awesome professional team) and I’ve been thinking about how to discuss those things with anyone who is interested, in an alternate forum.”
