The Dolce & Gabbana show is always an unabashed celebration of fashion and women, and the Fall 2015 collection was no exception. As the lights went down and the red curtains parted at The Metropol, a tableau of eleven women appeared. All of them wore black slip dresses and pumps—not unusual, except the models happened to be onstage with their children. This was one of the first times that we’ve ever seen children command the runway, especially in Milano. From babies to toddlers, the kids all stood there wearing white dresses and shirts and looking adorable. The crowd erupted in laughter, cheers, and applause, which prompted one of the babies to start clapping along as well. And that’s when the international fashion community basically let out a giant “awww.”

The show’s soundtrack prominently featured the song “Viva la Mamma” by Edoardo Bennato – everyone in attendance also received a songbook with the song’s lyrics translated into every language – and kept the mood light and joyous. Meanwhile a very pregnant Bianca Balti, one of the fashion house’s campaign stars, walked the runway in a fitted blush-colored dress that, once again, sent the crowd into cheers.

Three other models also walked down the runway with their babies, and each time one of them stepped out, the audience broke out into a collective grin. When Spice Girls’ “Mama” came on over the speakers, a few of the attendants were noticeably holding back tears (some better than others). The clothes also featured an adorable love note print that Dolce’s nieces and nephews had drawn for their mother. (A trend perhaps started by Angelina’s wedding veil?)

Dolce & Gabbana have often looked to their mothers and grandmothers for inspiration. A generation of women appear in their most recent campaign. We were among the enchanted crowd at this season’s showing. Everyone was beaming—and certainly thinking of their own famiglia—when exiting the venue.
