Pantsuits Take the Golden Globes, Led by Evan Rachel Wood
Thanks to Hillary Clinton, pantsuits enjoyed a spike in popularity in 2016. And it looks like Hollywood is determined to carry the trend into 2017. At the Golden Globes, a handful of stars turned out in pantsuits, which these days (intended or not), feels like a nod to the look that defined the 2016 election season.
Evan Rachel Wood’s custom Altuzarra tux went perfectly with her cropped haircut and was a standout on the red carpet. She also wore the piece to make a statement. “I’ve been to the Globes six times, and I’ve worn a dress every time. And I love dresses; I’m not trying to protest dresses,” she told Ryan Seacrest. “I wanted to make sure that young women and girls knew that they aren’t a requirement and that you don’t have to wear one if you don’t want to. Just be yourself, because your worth is much more than that.”
Wood also mentioned that her choice of outfit was a nod to Marlene Dietrich and David Bowie, noting that Jan. 8 was his birthday. Wood’s pantsuit included a pussy bow, a style that also made headlines this election season, when Melania Trump wore two different pussy bow looks to two presidential debates.
So basically, her look is (wittingly or unwittingly) a sartorial representation of the 2016 election season.
Kathryn Hahn also got in on the fun, showing up to the event in a black Brandon Maxwell pantsuit with a black bra peeking from underneath her jacket.
Hidden Figures star Octavia Spencer rocked a navy-blue Laura Basci tux for the ceremony.
Jill Soloway’s take on the look could serve as a pantsuit on the streets, and PJs under the sheets. The addition of the blue jacket gave her printed Gucci top and bottoms that red carpet edge.
Looks like pantsuits are here to stay in 2017.
