Maya Thurman-Hawke—Uma & Ethan’s Daughter—Has Arrived

If Q1 belonged to Lily Rose Depp, daughter of Vanessa Paradis and Johnny, Q2 is all about Maya Thurman-Hawke. The statuesque 17-year-old daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke made her fashion debut on Monday night. Sure, she’s accompanied her famous parents to a movie premiere or two, but she arrived at the CFDA Awards looking very much like her own movie star in the making. On the arm of Zac Posen, who’s escorted many a lady at this stage in her career, Thurman-Hawke twirled gleefully throughout Lincoln Center in a beaded black gown from the designer’s resort collection.
And that wasn’t the only reason people were buzzing about Thurman-Hawke on Monday. Variety reports that Sofia Coppola, who was working on a live action version of The Little Mermaid, dropped out of the film because the studio, Universal, wouldn’t let her pick her leading lady. Who did she want? Thurman-Hawke. “The Lost in Translation director was said to be very high [on her],” writes the trade paper, “while studio brass were wary about the pick.”

Thurman-Hawke’s only IMDB credit is an episode of Celebrities Uncensored from 2003—she was 5—so it’s understandable that a studio would be “wary” of sinking millions into a movie anchored by the teenager. However, Coppola’s proven quite skilled at turning young girls into major movie stars. Kirsten Dunst might have been a child actress, but The Virgin Suicides transformed her career, much like Lost in Translation did for Scarlett Johansson.

Coppola might not have gotten her way this time, but there’s no question Thurman-Hawke will be turned into a star. Hollywood loves to promote from within and fashion loves a nearly 6″ tall blonde daughter of another nearly 6″ tall blonde. Between the two industries, there’s a very busy future in store for Thurman-Hawke.
