Met Gala 2017: According to Selena Gomez, Maxi Dresses Are Here to Stay
Just like that, another Met Gala has twirled on by. On the first Monday in May, celebrities from the worlds of fashion, film, television, and music gussy up for one of the most exclusive events of the year — often dubbed the “the Oscars of the East Coast,” mainly due to the A-list stars who turn up. This year was no different. The theme was “Art of the In-Between,” in honor of Rei Kawakubo’s avant-garde, conceptual fashion designs for Comme des Gar?ons. Rihanna was one of the few guests who actually showed up in a Comme des Gar?ons look, whereas a plethora of other celebrities wore — surprise, surprise — maxi dresses.
Selena Gomez came with her boyfriend, the Weeknd, and wore a long silk chiffon maxi dress by Coach featuring delicate jewel clusters. Talkwalker (a social media analytics firm) confirmed that Gomez was the top trending celebrity on Monday night, with over 20,000 mentions on social media. Gomez’s maxi-dress counterparts included supermodel and new mom Behati Prinsloo, wearing a cut-out white dress from Topshop. Kim Kardashian wore a simple, off-the-shoulder white dress by Vivienne Westwood. Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen owned the red carpet (as always) in matching lace floor-length dresses that paid homage to their boho roots. Alexa Chung opted for a fun and flirty polka-dot maxi dress by Diane von Furstenberg.
As Gomez proves, long frocks are here to stay. Click ahead to shop nine maxi dresses that can work on red carpets and in real life.
