Michelle Obama’s Flowery Fashion Choices
Michelle Obama’s Flowery Fashion Choices
Michelle Obama’s like the Kate Middleton of the United States. Though the First Lady was catapulting designers into superstardom before the Duchess of Cambridge even became a royal, she’s the only political figure with the power to sell out a style stateside. Jason Wu, Isabel Toledo, Maria Pinto, and more have all been touched by the 50-year-old’s powerful fashion influence. And, on her current trip abroad, she’s adding even more lucky names to her roster. Designers who are bound to feel the mother of two’s influential effects include Altuzarra, Bibhu Mohapatra, Carolina Herrera, and Diane Von Furstenberg.

Coming off of Air Force One in New Delhi, India on Sunday, Obama wore a graphic floral dress and coat from U.S.-based Indian-born designer Bibhu Mohapatra to greet Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Mohapatra told WWD that he was “beyond ecstatic” that Obama chose the knee-length printed crepe dress and silk and wool cut-away jacket is from the designer’s spring collection. (She has chosen to wear pieces from Mohapatra before, most recently during a 2012 appearance on The Tonight Show.)

From there, Obama continued to wear chic pieces from top designers throughout her three-day trip. Attending a state dinner at Rashtrapati Bhawan, the Presidential Palace, she chose a brocade jacquard dress by Carolina Herrera. The next day, she wore a ladylike cream dress with a cropped jacket in a matching floral print, paired with metallic flats. On a rainy Monday, she wore Altuzarra’s ‘Poseidon’ peacoat and ‘Artemis’ dress from the Resort 2015 Collection while attending India’s Annual Republic Day Parade. And to bid adieu to the country, before heading back to Saudi Arabia, the First Lady impressed the crowd in a fitted black turtleneck dress in a poppy print with three-quarters sleeves.
Each outfit encapsulates the elegance a leader should exude. Obama’s confidence, beauty, fashion-forward thinking, and killer closet make her a fashion icon for millions — and a role model for so many more.
