Tom [Ford] told me not to wear anything under this dress tonight, so I didn’t,” says Miley Cyrus, front row at the designer’s FW 2015 runway show in Los Angeles on Friday night. That’s the kind of power Ford holds. The kind to gather everyone from Beyonce and Gwyneth Paltrow, from Magic Johnson to Jennifer Lopez, not to mention the editor in chiefs of all the major fashion magazines, in one room on LA’s busiest weekend of the year, mid-London fashion week.

“Everyone and their sister is either leaving London or didn’t go to London to be here,” says Eva Chen, editor-in-chief of Lucky magazine. “I think it’s incredibly smart and business-minded of him to show right before the Oscars…LA is just starting to turn toward that kind of fashion city and I hope this cements its status.”

Fergie agrees: “It’s such a big deal that Tom is showing in LA,” she told Yahoo Style.

“I couldn’t be more excited,” said stylist Rachel Zoe. “Maybe Marc Jacobs will be next?! I hope Tom’s starting a huge trend!” Given the enthusiastic turnout and buzzy energy, LA’s fashion crowd agrees. To welcome Ford to the Golden State, nearly everyone wore head-to-toe Ford, digging deep into his archives—there was even Tom for Gucci!—for a parade of slinky dresses, velvet tuxedoes, and the sexiest accessories.

“This dress is surprisingly comfortable,” Scarlett Johansson said of her short gold look from Ford’s pre-fall 2015 collection. “I just saw somebody else wearing the exact same dress and I had that moment, like when you’re at a wedding or something. Hopefully that won’t happen on Sunday.”

Johansson could guarantee that by wearing one of the singular gowns from Ford’s almost bohemian, ‘70s-inspired, but still very lux, collection. White petals fell from the ceiling (an homage to Ford’s final Gucci show in 2004) while models like Karlie Kloss, Gigi and Bella Hadid, Binx Walton, and Lexi Boling walked down the white runway in everything from patchwork denim to floor-length gowns. Ford was obviously feeling the laid-back air of Los Angeles. When has this titan of industry ever showed denim?!? In Ford’s hands, it was no ordinary jeans moment: His denim pencil skirts and jackets were deconstructed and reconstructed with fur; a full fur coat was made to look like patchwork denim; there were prairie tops and dresses worn with big, ornate jewelry and full-on fringe dresses and skirts. (And ScarJo, how about the decadent gown that Joan Smalls wore for her final turn for Sunday night?) For the starry audience, it was a chic and sophisticated collection that was still somewhat relaxed—the perfect amalgamation of California cool and high Hollywood glamour. “It was sexy, modern, and so, so good,” said Faith Hill. Model Amber Valetta summed it up well: “Tom loves women to be individual and strong and sexy and powerful.”

There is one thing, however, that Ford doesn’t have the power to do—get Beyonce and Jay Z to the show on time. When the lights went down and the music started, their seats (between Vogue’s Anna Wintour and Goop’s Gwyenth Paltrow) remained empty. Post-show, however, the king and queen landed at the end of the runway to congratulate Ford. “Sorry, it’s my fault,” confessed Beyonce, before the three got to talking about their kids. And just like that, everything went back to normal. Stars: they’re just like us!
