What Mindy Kaling's Knockout TCA Look Does and Doesn't Say
Yes, Mindy Kaling was at the Television Critics Association summer press tour to talk about being a mother — sort of. No, she did not, in fact, address the reports that she is pregnant with her first child. What she wore on the red carpet and onstage at TCA seems to be a kind of Roschach test: Some say she’s debuting her “baby bump” in it, while others note how form-fitting it is.
What we can say, positively, is that she looked gorgeous in the black, knee-length dress with sheer short sleeves and grommet details. She complemented it with some sky-high, ankle strap peep-toe shoes, and credited Jennifer Meyer Jewelry for her earrings and bracelets. Her glossy hair was curled to one shoulder, and she kept her look on the right side of vampy with a bold red lip. She was not there to call attention to her midsection — except for that one time, when she posed for a photo with a large green Hulu pillow in front of her torso. Wait, was that strategic placement, or a parody of strategic placement?

But the baby she was there to speak about was her show, The Mindy Project, which will come to an end after its upcoming sixth season. And the mother she was there to speak about was Mindy Lahiri, her onscreen character.
“I think she’s going to learn a little bit more about how to be a good, involved parent. We have a really funny episode where [Modern Family‘s] Julie Bowen plays a rival mother who thinks that Mindy’s not doing that great of a job,” executive producer Matt Warburton told reporters, according to People.
“The episode is a little bit about mom shaming and that’s cool,” said Kaling, who writes and produces the sitcom. “It was really fun and hit a lot of those juicy ripped-from-the-blogger-headline storylines.”
While we wait for her to indicate whether she is herself going to be a subject of mom shaming soon, we’ll leave you with her quote to Yahoo Style about motherhood two years ago: “I think I’ve decided that unlike everything else in my life, I’m going to be fast and loose about kids. I’m going to not actively plan, but if it happens, it would happen … I’m not cavalier about who I would have a kid with. But the thing I ask every parent that I really admire, the one comment they all have is that they wish they had kids earlier.”
