This Model Had the Best Reaction to Falling Really Hard on the Runway
The runway at Toni Maticevski’s fashion show in Sydney, Australia yesterday was pretty much every model’s worst nightmare: slick, mirrored, and covered in stairs. Strapped as the models were into sky-high stiletto heels and often wearing dresses that made it impossible for them to see their feet, a fall was all but guaranteed. The only question was, when?
That inevitable moment came late in she show when a model in a stride-restricting white dress with a voluminous top lost her footing while walking down the treacherous catwalk stairs.
One minute she was up.
The next, down she went - photographers clicking away like mad to catch every awkward moment of her decent.
Except that, as far as runway falls go, this one wasn’t awkward in the least. In fact, it was kind of beautiful.
Just look at the dramatic flare that ruffle made on the model’s way down. It’s not often you see a dress that looks better falling down than standing up.
Of course, even a beautiful fall can result in very real injuries, but, luckily, this does not seem to have been the case here. If anything, the model looked amused by the whole situation - laughing it off even before she hit the ground and then returning to her feet to finish the show like the pro that she is.
The situation could have turned out very differently, though. If her hands had been restricted behind her back in the ornate handcuff bracelets some of the models wore, she never would have been able to catch herself so gracefully, if at all.
And she could easily have cracked a tooth, or worse, if she had been wearing one of the elaborate metal ballgags many of the models were forced to wear.
Seriously, designers need to stop putting models in these ridiculous and dangerous situations to begin with. There is nothing chic about sending a woman down a bunch of stairs in slick high heels with her hands bound and a gag in her mouth. That’s not fashion. That’s misogyny. And it needs to stop already.
