Monica Lewinsky’s Très Chic in a Crop Top at Cannes Lions

French girl style isn’t easy to emulate — there’s a reason why Americans have drooled over Parisian styles for centuries. But with Cannes Lions, the advertising and communication world’s annual awards show, in full swing, attracting the likes of Kim Kardashian, Julia Louis Dreyfus, Pharrell — all attempting to capture that je ne sais quoi — shockingly enough, Monica Lewinsky did it best.
The activist, who spoke on her cyberbullying platform for the firm Ogilvy & Mather, wore a navy blue and floral crop top (yes, at 41, pulling off the midriff-baring style’s totally possible), Breton sailor stripe skirt, paired with leather strappy wedges, and a small cross-body bag.
Lewinsky, who proclaimed herself to be “’Patient Zero’ of Internet shaming, hasn’t had an easy transition back into the public eye in sartorial terms. Following her Vanity Fair treatise, she’s eased back into getting photographed — following her President Bill Clinton scandal, she was stalked by paparazzi for years and even became a party scenester at some point before taking a sabbatical from the hoopla — but her red carpet appearances haven’t necessarily been met with applause from the fashion police. A black gown she wore on the Trevor Project red carpet was made of a thin material and flashing lights revealed her undergarments; a series of plain black dresses at events such as the Golden Globes, New York Fashion Week, and various galas followed; and then the Tony’s, where Lewinsky wore a red off-the-should dress with lace detailing. She received criticism, from Yahoo Style included, that the look was “too young” and even “frumpy.”
But Lewinsky’s taken it all in stride. Instead of lashing out, she stands on podiums and preaches: “We need a cultural revolution on this matter. Public shaming as a blood sport has to stop, and it’s time for an intervention on the Internet and in our culture.” And dresses really well as revenge.
