Most Fashionable Techie Ever? Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel Covers L’Uomo Vogue

Tech titans aren’t really known for their high fashion sensibilities. Mark Zuckerburg made the hoodie a Silicon Valley staple and Steve Jobs’s uniform was a black turtleneck and New Balance sneakers. This dress code of sneakers and sweatshirts has been prevalent for years, but it seems there’s a style maverick in town — or a few miles South in Los Angeles — looking to shake things up: Evan Spiegel.

The 25-year-old founder of Snapchat, the social media network du jour for young people with smartphones, appears on the October cover of L’Uomo Vogue (whose former front page stars include Jake Gyllenhaal last month, Justin Bieber for the July-August issue, and Dane DeHaan in June).

In the feature story, Spiegel spews the same corporate quotes everyone’s already heard: the ethos of the brand stems from seeing photographs as a means of communication and not just preservation; the “Discover” section lets users view an event, such as a debate or basketball game, from many different angles; and vertical as opposed to horizontal video leads to higher completion rates. But while the story on the former Stanford student (he dropped out his senior year) isn’t very revealing, the accompanying images certainly are.

In the spread, the California native — he chose to headquarter his company in Venice as opposed to the Bay Area — poses in Burberry, Dior, Bottega Veneta, and Louis Vuitton, showing off his modeling skills, which come in addition to his coding ones. While this is certainly the most concrete mark of Spiegel’s love of fashion, it’s definitely not his first declaration. In his official headshot, he’s wearing a Kenzo sweater with a knitted tiger head and during a talk with Vanity Fair he wore a $220 Acne sweatshirt with “You First” on it.
Sure, he’s more likely to be snapped in jeans and a white V-neck tee with crisp white sneakers (with his most fashionable accessory, his former Victoria’s Secret model girlfriend Miranda Kerr on his arm), but if this editorial reasserts anything, he likes to take risks — in more ways than one.
