My Boss Embarrassed Me in Front of Ansel Elgort at the Met Gala
The Met Gala’s a night where all eyes are on the celebrities. Right? Well for a majority at least. At Monday’s red carpet—which was my very first time covering the event—the camera managed to turn to me. And it’s not because my dress rivaled Rihanna’s or because I showed up late like Beyoncé. My boss, Joe Zee, embarrassed me…on camera.
Ever since The Fault in Our Stars hit theaters, my unabashed love for Ansel Elgort has been no secret. I saw the movie with my coworker (side note: while I sobbed, she laughed), hence the reason why the news of my crush became public office knowledge. And I was cool with it! A girl can dream, right?
While I knew the red carpet at the Met would be full of the handsome gents on my celeb lust list (Bradley Cooper! R. Patz!) I never thought someone, let alone my boss, would call me out on my crush, to my crush. Even better, it’s caught on camera.
“My editors over there, they have the biggest crush on you and you’ve got to say hi,” Joe demanded of Ansel. (Which really means “My editor (singular!) Erika over there has the biggest crush on you and you've got to say hi.”) I played totally cool…not. I then proceeded to summon him with flailing arms—why!?—giggle like a pre-pubescent teenage girl, and ask him what he’s wearing. (Like, could I have thought of a more basic question?)
Me, on the left, waving Ansel Elgort down.
My co-reporter managed to squeeze a couple other questions out of him until I cut her off and asked him for a shout out. I got a “Hello!” for Snapchat (which was promptly saved to my camera roll for posterity) and so goes the story of my epic exchange, thanks to my boss, with one of my celebrity crushes.
I killed it—in the literal way, not in the “you did so well, awesome job, you destroyed it!” way.
Thanks, Joe! Ansel: Call me.
