‘Offensive and Irresponsible’ Calvin Klein Poster Removed Following Complaints
A Calvin Klein ad has been removed from a store’s window after customers complained that the photo sexualizes children. Customers at House of Fraser in the United Kingdom has responded to concerns that the young model — wearing a black bra and tugging at one strap — was too youthful-looking to be posing in such a suggestive way.
Rachel Ashby told the Daily Mail that she spotted the campaign while shopping with her young daughter and friend, and was shocked by the “offensive and irresponsible” advertisement. “While I realize it is likely she is probably of legal age to appear, the fact that she looks underage in terms of body shape and somewhat vulnerable facial expression, combined with the fact that she is wearing very little and is adopting a strangely provocative pose means it could be deemed to sexualize children,” she said.
Speaking out got immediate results; a House of Fraser spokeswoman confirmed to the Daily Mail that the Calvin Klein display has been pulled from stores.
The campaign’s face is a model who goes by the name Lulu. She led models down the runway at the recent Raf Simons for Calvin Klein show, prompting Vogue to describe her as a “fresh-faced newcomer.”

In a fashion world where youth is always trending, this isn’t the first time that an ad has been censored for alleged sexualization of a young person. A Miu Miu ad starring then 14-year-old Hailey Steinfeld in a midriff-baring top was banned by the British Advertising Authority in 2011. Similarly under fire was a Prada ad featuring Mia Goth, who was sitting on railroad tracks. Calvin Klein has also had its fair share of brushes with authority, including for an ad of with Lara Stone surrounded by men in 2010; it was banned for promoting rape.
