One Veteran Actress Concurs That Yes, It's 'Pretty Hard' For Women in Hollywood
Last night, Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont was buzzing with beautifully brave women – and Jon Hamm – to celebrate actress Zoey Deutch as the 2017 Women In Film Max Mara Face of the Future Award recipient. She will be awarded formally at tonight’s Crystal+Lucy Awards where Elizabeth Banks and Tracee Ellis Ross, among others, will be honored for making change in Hollywood.
Hamm – whose most recent film Baby Driver releases the end of this month – was chatty and social. And he’s a big supporter of women, like Gal Gadot in the smash Wonder Woman, showing Tinseltown that there’s no such thing as a cinematic glass ceiling.
“I’ve had the very good fortune to work with a lot of really talented women on both sides of the camera and I hope that that ceiling is cracked enough that it comes down, because it’s silly,” Hamm told Yahoo Style.
Veteran actress Shohreh Aghdashloo stepped in for some real talk about how tough women have it.
“It’s been pretty hard, not just for me, but for every female in this industry. It’s not that guys don’t like us — guys like their club. They’d rather do it together then sharing it with us. But they also need us, so let’s just take the opportunity and work with them – shoulder to shoulder.”
Nearly all the attendees were donned in head-to-toe MaxMara and so we couldn’t help but wonder: what’s their go-to power outfit?
“I have a problem with big coats,” said Madelyn Deutch, who has worked as an actress but thinks of herself as a writer first and is releasing The Year of Spectacular Men, her first feature film, this week at the Los Angeles Film Festival. It’s a family affair: her mother Lea Thompson directed and sister/honoree of the night Zoey Deutch co-starred in it.
“The guy I’m dating asked me if we could please go out when not wearing nine trench coats. But I’m like, ‘No. Nine trench coats is my default.’ It’s one coat, but I can’t help myself, it looks like nine because they’re so big. For some reason, I love dusters and floor length big, boss coats. Maybe it makes me feel like [that kind of] boss dude with a big cigar.”
For Scandal politico Bellamy Young, it’s all about the footwear: “I like an amazing pair of heels and they can make me feel invincible. I wore these boots on Lip Sync Battle that as of now I still do not own, but they are aspirational for me. They’re Cesare Paciotti and they have all these buckles and they were like hell on wheels.”
Lea Thompson and Yael Grobglas (Jane the Virgin) agreed: It’s in the shoes. “I have some incredible boots that I wear,” said Thompson. “Sorel made all these crazy new boots — they made these super-cute high boots. I got them as swag at Sundance and I put them on and I felt like a badass. There’s something about boots that make you feel ready to run.”
Grobglas added that feeling empowered is her reason for having lots of shoes. “I pick a pair based on the person I want to be that day. That’s my battle outfit.”
