Pink Pussy Hats Unite Millions at Women’s Marches Around the World

For the Women’s March on Washington on Saturday, there was a very specific uniform: layers to keep warm, a witty sign, and a pink pussy hat.

Thanks to the Pussy Hat Project, which launched in November to encourage knitters to make pink cat-eared hats, protesters around the world — from Washington, D.C., where more than half a million people have gathered, to Tbilisi, Georgia — are united in fashion.

The pink-hatted crowds traveled to the marches on buses, trains and planes and automobiles, with reports of people putting finishing touches on their toppers while in transit.

A pair of Brooklyn friends traveling on an Amtrak train from New York City to D.C. on Friday afternoon pulled out skeins of hot-pink yarn and got down to the business of knitting their hats as soon as they settled into their seats. “This is the crappy yarn we had to resort to,” a bemused Luisa Engel told Yahoo Style senior editor Beth Greenfield, knitting furiously alongside pal Liz Ambrosia. “It’s from Michael’s.” After looking everywhere for the recommended worsted weight skeins but being faced with a wiped-out stock, they were faced with a decision: “fancy” $20-a-skein yarn or the bright acrylic $3.49-a-skein option. They went with the latter.

And it was reported on the Facebook Group Pantsuit Nation that, on a plane from Detroit to D.C. on Friday that was full of passengers in pink hats, “the flight attendant made an announcement asking for anyone who wanted to sell pussy hats to others to push the call button.”

An accompanying photo shows the few un-hatted folks on the plane raising their hands to purchase the hats.
