Prince George and Princess Charlotte Pose With the Queen for Her Birthday

On Thursday, the queen turns 90. And to celebrate, the royal family has released a selection of stunning photographs of Her Majesty — including a beautiful portrait of the great lady herself surrounded by her seven great-grandchildren.
Captured by photographer-to-the-stars Annie Leibovitz, whose images have graced the cover of Vogue and Vanity Fair countless times, the picture shows the nonagenarian cuddling up to Princess Charlotte, who turns 1 on May 2, while George stands to the side of his sister and “Gan-Gan.” Mia Tindall, a cousin, stands to the right clutching the queen’s handbag.
The image was taken last month in the Green Drawing Room at Windsor Castle and was said to be a “lovely, jolly affair” and “very relaxed.” Although attempting to get seven young children to sit still and smile for a world-famous photograph could not have been an easy feat. Nevertheless, the end result, is one for the history books — but actually.

All the kids are dressed in their Easter best, which makes sense considering the portrait session took place following the festivities. George wears yet another design by a Spanish children’s wear designer (the Duchess of Cambridge does have a penchant for brands from that country, after all). The 3-year-old paired (or rather his mother did so) a cardigan from Fina Ejerique — the same brand he wore for his family’s Christmas card photo last year— with a white polo shirt, burgundy shorts, knee-high socks, and shoes from Startrite. The sweater has already sold out, but the brand offers lots of other similar, traditional pieces for kids.
Charlotte, now 11 months old, looks adorable in a pale pink getup. In the photo, she’s in an outfit that looks a lot like the one she was pictured wearing in the family’s holiday card in December, consisting of a flowered dress that was a gift from her nanny from M+H, a Spanish boutique, tights from Amaia, and a pink cardigan. Look closely and it seems like the youngest royal is playing with a plastic toy horse.
The other children in the image include James, Viscount Severn, 8, and Lady Louise, 12, the children of the Earl and Countess of Wessex; Savannah, 5, and Isla Phillips, 3, the daughters of the queen’s eldest grandson, Peter Phillips, and his wife, Autumn. And, the scene-stealer herself, Mia, the 2-year-old daughter of Mike and Zara Tindall, who is known to carry her great-grandmother’s purse everywhere.
