Rodarte’s Bee-Inspired Show Had Us Buzzing With Delight
Sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s Rodarte show is no doubt one of the highlights of New York Fashion Week, and this season proved to be among the label’s best so far — although I feel like I say that after every season. But the way the Mulleavy sisters continue to do their brilliant, idiosyncratic thing —and keep jaded fashion editors, buyers, and all the in-betweeners coming back and wanting more — is certainly a testimony to their talent and vision. This collection was inspired by Janis Joplin and bees (yes, the humble insect), and had us all buzzing with excitement for spring 2017!

The Designers: California-based sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy began their label, Rodarte, in 2006, and it quickly became (and has remained) one of New York Fashion Week’s must-see shows. The sisters are BFFs with everyone from rock goddess Kim Gordon to young Hollywood favorites like Elle Fanning, Kirsten Dunst, Chlo? Sevigny, and Natalie Portman, who won her Oscar wearing a custom Rodarte gown.

The Scene: Models weaved around the set, which featured colored lights and floral arrangements on the floor in a nod to bees buzzing in their hive. They all looked like queen bees to us!

#WantItNow, Part 1: This show was visually striking from the very first look, but if there was a standout, then all the dresses in tulle and lace won, hands down. This one was especially lovely. A white-lace, high-neck bodice with a honeycomb-cutout tiered skirt is what dreams are made of!

#WantItNow, Part 2: An all-black-leather studded jacket with fringing and safety pins would make our gal Janis Joplin red with envy.

Future Red Carpet Fave, Part 1: There were plenty, so let’s start with the black honeycomb-lace sequin dress with hand-beaded gold bodice shown above. Exquisite.

Future Red Carpet Fave, Part 2: What better way to make a splash on the red carpet than by giving it a run for its money? This red sequin ruched blouse with exaggerated ruffle sleeves and lace tiered skirt should do the trick.

Future Red Carpet Fave, Part 3: Evening gowns come to us in black, white, and pale yellow this season at Rodarte.

Future Red-Carpet Fave, Part 4: Or one can also argue that this would make one hell of a wedding gown!

Can I Kick It: Best shoes of the bunch? A pale-yellow studded-leather close-toe heel is one of the shoe styles that finishes off the look to perfection!
