Sarah Jessica Parker just announced her return to HBO. More than ten years after wrapping up Sex and the City, she’s producing her own show: Divorce. Of course it’s already drawing comparisons to the beloved series that took Parker from famous to ubiquitous, but it sounds like their similarities will end at being set in New York City and airing on HBO. Parker says she’s interested in exploring the bits of life that don’t get seen as much on television, the successful woman trying to navigate relationships at this particular stage in life, and what really happens when a couple goes through a divorce. Most romantic comedies end once the relationship starts, this will pick up at the other end.
“I think marriage is wonderfully complicated and wonderfully interesting, and everybody conducts their marriage differently,” Parker said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, “I think we’re at an age where a lot of people have experienced [divorce]. Or are about to, or want to, or secretly wish they could. Or [are] so grateful that their marriage isn’t at that state, so I love the idea of telling that story.” The series will also star SNL alum Molly Shannon.
In the interview, she also talked about her personal style—she really just wears whatever she likes. "You know, I run my kids to school, I can’t wear heels. I know it’s disappointing,” she continued, “but, the truth is, you know, I live in a city and there’s snow and mud and rain and curbs… and I kind of just wear what I like to wear.“ Ok fine, but we won’t pretend we’re not thrilled that Parker will be back up on the small screen, showing off new outfits every week. Because there’s no way she’ll be anything less than inspiring—even if said divorce is particularly nasty.
